Our Waihi Operation in the North Island of New Zealand is an underground gold mine. A recent consent for the Waihi North Project, a new mine to be developed 6km north of the existing operation has provided a long-term extension of mine life providing our 400 staff and contractors, and the people of Waihi, an assurance that we plan to be here for the long-term.

Job Description

The Senior Mining Engineer is a hands-on technical leader responsible for both delivering key mine planning outputs and managing a small team of engineers. Approximately 60% of the role involves completing planning activities directly, including development designs, production planning (stope authorities, drill & blast designs), and short-term scheduling. The remaining 40% focuses on overseeing team deliverables, ensuring alignment with monthly objectives, and mentoring a team of 3–4 engineers across short-term planning, development, and production. The role requires close collaboration with Geotechnical, survey, and operations teams to ensure safe, efficient execution of the weekly and monthly mine plans

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development of short term mine plans, ensuring alignment with production targets and monthly plans
  • Ensure the preparation and review of stope designs, drill and blast plans, and other technical documents to deliver monthly plans
  • Monitor compliance to plan and adapt schedules as needed in response to operational conditions
  • Apply strong Deswik skills (CAD and OPS) to create and review mine designs and schedules
  • Actively support delivery of the weekly and monthly plans by working closely with operations to identify and resolve execution challenges.
  • Bring work forward or implement contingencies to maintain production when planned activities are delayed or impacted.
  • Timely review of historic working interactions when encountered to ensure mine schedule is maintained.
  • Coach, support and develop the team to build knowledge and skills to provide coverage and to build succession plans.
  • Ensure appropriate professional development or training plans are in place to meet safety and process requirements and to harness the skills, competencies and potential that exists within the team.

Qualifications

  • A recognised degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent.

  • Full and Current Driver Licence, ability to drive manual vehicles is preferred.

  • Minimum of 4 years post graduate experience in mining engineering.
