Our Waihi Operation in the North Island of New Zealand is an underground gold mine. A recent consent for the Waihi North Project, a new mine to be developed 6km north of the existing operation has provided a long-term extension of mine life providing our 400 staff and contractors, and the people of Waihi, an assurance that we plan to be here for the long-term.
Job Description
A new position has been created to provide technical support and leadership for the site’s process control and automation systems, with a strong focus on industrial networking, DCS and PLC platforms, and PI System/PI Vision maintenance. The role is responsible for maintaining the reliability, integrity, and performance of these systems, supporting fault finding and continuous improvement, and ensuring control infrastructure remains fit for purpose. This position is suited to a person with a strong electrical, instrumentation, automation, or control systems background, with the ability to work across multiple technologies and support the wider maintenance team.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Maintain and support the site’s DCS, PLC, HMI, industrial network and PI System/PI Vision infrastructure to ensure reliability, availability and data integrity.
- Carry out system health checks, backups, patching, fault finding and minor configuration or logic changes in line with site standards and change control requirements.
- Support ongoing maintenance and development of the Waihi PI System, including tag integrity, data quality, visualisation performance and user support.
- Maintain and verify critical field instrumentation and control loops to support safe, stable and efficient plant operation.
- Lead or support fault finding, root cause analysis and corrective actions for automation, instrumentation and control system issues.
- Support control system upgrades, migrations and modifications, including testing, commissioning and management of change requirements.
- Provide high-level technical support to maintenance and operations teams during breakdowns, shutdowns and planned work.
- Work closely with operations, maintenance and contractors to coordinate priorities, support shutdowns and deliver reliable plant outcomes.
- Carry out all work in line with site safety, risk, environmental and permit requirements, and support compliance activities associated with control systems and instrumentation.
Qualifications
- Relevant qualification or equivalent experience in electrical, instrumentation, automation or control systems.
- Strong experience maintaining and troubleshooting process plant control systems, including DCS, PLC, HMI, instrumentation and industrial networks.
- Experience supporting PI System/PI Vision or similar plant data and visualisation platforms.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and schematics, including wiring diagrams, loop drawings and P&IDs.
- Experience in a senior maintenance, technical support or supervisory role.
- Familiarity with OEM automation platforms, cybersecurity practices and control system change management.
