Our Waihi Operation in the North Island of New Zealand is an underground gold mine. A recent consent for the Waihi North Project, a new mine to be developed 6km north of the existing operation has provided a long term extension of mine life providing our 400 staff and contractors, and the people of Waihi, an assurance that we plan to be here for the long-term.

The Superintendent - Mining primarily responsible for overseeing safe and efficient mining practices inline with the published mining schedules. They are also responsible for input into mining budgets to ensure the most efficient use of all equipment and processes.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
Operational:
- In conjunction with the Short Term Planning Engineer, and Production Engineer ensure resources are in place to meet mining schedules.
- Maintain knowledge of current statutory requirements and industry best practise and ensure compliance at all times.
- Monitor equipment statistics to ensure that key KPI’s are met.
- Review underground mining methods and implement optimisation programs where appropriate.
- Ensure essential underground mining operations infrastructure is maintained through timely maintenance intervention and upgrades when required.
- Review all mine designs to ensure that they are maximised for operational efficiency.
Production:
- Review production targets in conjunction with the Engineering team and coordinate the implementation of operational improvement plans.
- Ensure Production equipment is utilised in line with budgeted requirements.
Safety:
- Establish and maintain the highest possible standards of housekeeping and cleanliness in individual work area and mine site in general.
- Oversee pre shift and crew safety meetings.
- Lead and facilitate the use of safety tools to ensure operational activities are done at an acceptable level of risk.
- Lead the investigation of incidents and injuries underground to ensure appropriate corrective actions are implemented.
- Review and update key parts of the Health and Safety Management system relating to underground activities.
- Ensure all site rules are complied with through visual leadership and active management.
People Management:
- Use performance management systems to improve individual performance to meet or exceeds acceptable standards.
- Lead and develop mining supervisors to ensure cultural behaviours are inline with company values.
- Ensure human and employment relations issues are handled in a timely and effective manner.
- Fully investigate non-compliances to policies and standards and take action to ensure positive outcomes for the underground mine operations group.
- Lead professional development workshops with peers and direct reports to ensure aligned objectives.
Financial:
- Monitor monthly operational expenditure to ensure compliance to mining budgets.
- Develop manning strategy and costs to supplement annual budgets and reviews.
- Manage operational contracts in line with company standards.
Other:
- Act as Acting Mining Manager in periods of leave and absence.
- Carry out all other duties that may reasonably be required.
Qualifications
- New Zealand A Grade Tunnel Managers’ Certificate of Competency (or the ability to obtain).
- Current First Aid Certificate.
- Current full Driver Licence, ability to drive manual vehicles preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum 15 years underground mining experience with exposure to mechanised development and production techniques.
- A proven track record of supervising and coordinating underground mining personnel and contractor activities.
- Extensive knowledge of the practices and techniques applied in underground mining.
