Principal Position Objective:

Responsible for all underground electrical and instrumentation activities.  This position combines the responsibilities for E&I technicians, schedule execution, continuous improvement, and staffing to ensure company standards are maintained. Perform difficult and complex electrical and instrumentation/control installation and repair for Underground Infrastructure (both above and below ground). Supervise entry and journey-level electrical and instrumentation technicians and lead workers involved in the preventative maintenance, adjustment, repair, overhaul, replacement, and installation of electrical and instrumentation apparatus and related equipment and devices. Ensure work is completed following appropriate and applicable provisions of the Electric code, approved plans and specifications, and standard industry practices. Perform other duties as directed by the Maintenance Superintendent

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Operational:

• Provide courteous and expeditious service to Operations and other departments as needed.
• Routinely adhere to and maintain a positive attitude towards departmental and corporate goals.
• Supervise and engage E&I Technicians in constructing, installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing electrical circuits.
• Oversee and perform troubleshooting and repairing of instrumentation systems, control, and process loops, PIDs, and associated equipment.
• Supervise, direct, and participate in troubleshooting, repairing, installation, maintenance, and repairs of instrumentation systems, control circuits and process loops, PIDs, and associated equipment.
• Supervise and participate in the inspection of tele-metering, electric controllers, programmable controllers, process meters, analyzer's, flow systems,  and a variety of other types of instrumentation for proper operation.
• Oversee and direct the installations, repairs, modifications, calibration, and preventative maintenance on a wide variety of complex digital, analogue, programmable, and other auxiliary equipment used, keeping accurate records.
• Monitor the work performed by contractors on work scopes related to electrical and electronic apparatus and instrumentation including repair, replacement, disassembling, assembling, installing, and testing.
• Read, interpret, and direct others regarding electrical and instrumentation plans, specifications, blueprints, sketches, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
• Supervise the testing of power distribution, transformers, circuit breakers, meters, and other apparatus; oversee others engaged in performing routine maintenance of electrical equipment and supplies.
• Inspection of equipment installation work performed by contractors and other personnel for workmanship and compliance.
• Estimate labour and materials for electrical installations and repairs.
• Maintain an inventory of parts, materials, and supplies used in performing everyday tasks.
• Oversee and participate in the documentation and record all programming, testing, and updates performed.
• Evaluate and maintain instrumentation backup records of all instruments used in the underground: prepare routine and special reports on equipment maintenance and repairs a needed.
• Assure effective cost and manpower controls through a formal and continuing maintenance management program.
• Maintain network communication between equipment, controls, field hardware, and DCS system.
• Respond to emergency situations during off hours as required.
• Review and provide input and suggestions on new system requirements.
• Participate in safety programs and coordinate the training of assigned staff.
• Develop training, instruction, and evaluation to entry and journey-level electrical/instrumentation personnel.
• Work effectively with others.
• Operate Department vehicles.
• Prepare written and verbal reports, memorandums, and correspondence.
• Assist in preparing annual budget.
• Report weekly and monthly on maintenance performance indicators and present these to the Maintenance Superintendent with initiatives for continuous improvement.
• Develop the plan to provide supervision and management of internal & external resources outside of normal business hours when required for shutdowns and other major works.

Safety:

• Ensures that all tasks comply with Company health and safety requirements and policies and procedures and strengthens the culture of safety in the workplace.
• Demonstrate safety awareness.
• Participate in safety meetings and site safety programmes.

Qualifications:

• Principles, theory, and practices of electricity, electronics, pneumatics, hydraulics, and mechanics as they apply to maintenance and repair of equipment and instruments commonly found in underground mining
• Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming theory at an advanced level for testing, troubleshooting, and repairs of PLC components and data highway systems.
• Applicable codes and regulations.
• Industrial electricity and safety practices, precaution, and procedures.
• Shop mathematics applicable to the electrical trade.
• Principle of project management.
• Mid-level computer operation skills, including word processing, database programs, spreadsheets, electronic mail, department utilized software application programs, and SCADA operation
• Instrumentation calibration concepts and procedures.
• Complex record keeping, documentation, and practices.
• General principle of supervision and training.
• Correct instrument operating problems and make recommendations for system modifications to meet operational needs without close supervision.
• Read, understand, interpret, and apply moderately complex materials including technical manuals, drawings, specifications, layouts, diagrams, blueprints, plans, and schematics.
• Keep detailed, complex, and accurate records.
• Recognize, report, and/or correct unsafe working conditions.
• Understand and carry out routine to complex instructions furnished in oral, written, or diagrammatic form
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
• Assign tasks; train and evaluate progress of assigned employees.

Education and Experience:

 5 years of mining Electrical experience, underground preferred.

High School graduate or G.E.D. equivalent and Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Instrumentation and Control Systems, or closely related science, and four (4) years of journey-level experience in electrical and electronic instrumentation maintenance and repair (utility/industrial applications preferred).

OR

A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or Instrumentation and Control Systems, or closely related science, and two (2) years of journey-level experience in electrical and electronic instrumentation maintenance and repair (utility/industrial applications preferred).

OR

High School graduation or G.E.D. equivalent and eight (8) years of journey-level experience in electrical systems and electronic instrumentation installation, maintenance and repair, two (2) years of which must be in a supervisory capacity or four (4) years in a lead capacity (utility/industrial applications preferred).

Physical Requirements:

1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs, talk, hear and see.
2. Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 25 pounds) during the course of the workday.
3. Work is in a surface mine plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity.
4. Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.
