Nutrition Action Zimbabwe is a local registered PVO operating in Zimbabwe since 2014. The organization’s primary focus is combating malnutrition in all its forms, through effective implementation of quality programming for both nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive programming. NAZ’s community-based approach focuses on implementing programs that empower communities through capacity building, knowledge sharing, and promoting sustainable practices. To foster sustainable and effective interventions, NAZ works closely with national, regional, and international organizations to design and implement evidence-based nutrition programs across Zimbabwe. NAZ seeks to recruit for the aforementioned position.
Job Description
Position summary:
Facilitate and provide technical support for the validation of drought anticipatory action plans (AAPs), support drought operational readiness activities, and collaborate with district- and ward-based stakeholders and community members to strengthen disaster risk reduction, early warning, community preparedness, and accountability systems under the Start Ready project.
Duties and Responsibilities
include but are not limited to:
Objective 1: Anticipatory Action Capacity Analysis, Stakeholder Engagement and Coordination
- Build stakeholder and community capacity to implement forecasting, monitoring and early warning systems.
- Analyse existing forecasting and early warning systems and support their improvement.
- Conduct situational analyses, including risk and vulnerability analyses and needs assessments in targeted communities.
- Support the validation of anticipatory action plans and the local verification of hazard, risk and vulnerability analyses.
- Support region-specific impact-based forecasting assessments for priority hazard scenarios.
- Map and analyse the anticipatory action landscape at national and district level, including stakeholder engagement and planning.
- Participate in anticipatory action, Civil Protection Unit coordination and working group meetings.
- Conduct community mobilisation and awareness-raising activities on anticipatory actions and related readiness project activities.
- Organise and facilitate AAP meetings and workshops with stakeholders and community members.
Objective 2: Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning
- Participate in data collection and analysis across all project interventions.
- Compile and submit weekly, monthly and quarterly reports as required.
- Document success stories, photographs, project briefs, best practices and lessons learned from project activities, including filing paper-based data and evidence.
- Facilitate the community-led MEAL component of the project, including technical support, backstopping and training of community monitors.
- Establish and maintain a functional beneficiary feedback and accountability mechanism, ensuring issues are followed up until resolved.
- Support the development, testing and adoption of data collection tools and methodologies.
- Facilitate data collection and analysis for AAP assessments, update the Indicator Tracking Table (ITT) and/or project dashboard, support report writing and participate in project surveys.
Objective 3: Community-based Drought Readiness, AAP Validation and Implementation
- Facilitate planned drought readiness activities, including stakeholder and community training, beneficiary selection, asset assessment and pre-positioning of inputs and services.
- Conduct community consultation and feedback meetings.
- Facilitate AAP validation workshops with stakeholders.
- Support the development of complete and validated AAPs, including detailed operational plans, budgets, finance and logistics plans, and a MEAL concept.
- Track and monitor the WFP PRISM drought trigger model in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
Policy compliance – Mandatory Reporting Policy (MRP):
- Comply with all NAZ policies.
- Assist where necessary in undertaking activities that aim to prevent the occurrence of sexual abuse and exploitation of beneficiaries by NAZ and other humanitarian workers.
Confidentiality:
- Ensuring the non-disclosure of any information whatsoever relating to the practices and business of NAZ acquired in the course of duty, to any other person or organization without authority, except in the normal execution of duty.
Note: The role of DRR Field Assistant cannot be limited to the specific duties and tasks detailed herein and may be adjusted in accordance with the needs and operational circumstances of the organization. The success of NAZ’s mission is the highest priority and all issues which arise must be addressed accordingly. Therefore, the DRR Field Assistant will be required to manage all unforeseen issues and circumstances and remain flexible to perform other duties, as and when required.
Qualifications
Qualifications and requirements:
The following may be acquired through a combination of formal or self-education, prior experience or on-the-job training.
Education Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Development Studies, Disaster Management, Climate Change, Anticipatory Actions, Agriculture or a related field.
- At least two years’ experience in anticipatory actions, agriculture and/or disaster risk management, including training and capacity building of stakeholders and smallholder farmers.
- Hands-on field experience is required.
- Experience in disaster risk management and anticipatory action programming is required.
- Ability and willingness to ride a motorcycle is an added advantage.
Technical Skills:
- Good organisational capacity and ability to manage field activities effectively.
- Knowledge of local disaster risk reduction strategies, disaster risk management principles and anticipatory action concepts.
- Understanding of early warning systems, forecasting, hazard monitoring and community preparedness approaches.
- Experience using mobile data collection tools such as KoboToolbox or ODK.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and basic digital reporting tools.
- Strong report writing, documentation and field data management skills.
- Community facilitation skills, including participatory rural appraisal approaches.
- Stakeholder coordination and ability to work with district, ward and community-level structures.
