    Job Description

    About Brookline Collaborative Care Clinic

Brookline Collaborative Care Clinic is a modern, multidisciplinary medical centre located in the growing West Bedford community of Nova Scotia.

Founded and managed by experienced healthcare administrators, Brookline was designed with two important goals in mind: improving access to healthcare for patients while creating a supportive, efficient, and rewarding practice environment for physicians.

Our established family medicine practice is home to seven full-time family physicians, supported by a dedicated nursing and administrative team. In addition to comprehensive family medicine, we provide evening Access Clinics and weekend After-Hours Clinics to help address the growing need for timely, community-based medical care.

Following an enthusiastic response to our extended-hours services, we are expanding our physician coverage and inviting additional physicians to join our team.

    Position Overview

We are seeking licensed physicians interested in providing semi-urgent, episodic medical care during evenings and weekends.

This opportunity is particularly well suited to physicians who would like to supplement their income or work part time through fee-for-service billing without taking on rostered patients, long-term follow-up responsibilities, or the administrative burden of managing another practice.

Our extended-hours clinics are designed to provide efficient, focused medical care for patients with non-emergency concerns, supported by experienced nursing staff, organized patient flow, and convenient online appointment booking.

Physicians can participate in occasional shifts or establish a recurring schedule based on their availability.

Flexible Scheduling – Try a Shift Before Committing!

We recognize that physicians have busy professional and personal schedules, and we aim to make participation as flexible as possible.

    • Weekend coverage is our current priority, with opportunities available on Saturdays or Sundays.
    • Additional evening shifts are available every evening except Thursday.
    • Weekend shifts are typically four hours or longer.
    • Shift dates and times can be arranged collaboratively to accommodate physician availability.
    • Opportunities are available for both occasional coverage and regular recurring shifts.
    • Physicians are welcome to try a shift with our team before committing to a regular schedule but the goal is to create a structured schedule to alleviate unnecessary administrative burden.

    Clinical & Administrative Support

One of Brookline's greatest advantages is our established clinical infrastructure and dedicated support team.

Our goal is to allow physicians to spend their time providing medical care rather than managing administrative responsibilities.

    Dedicated Triaging

An experienced member of our clinic support team is available to ensure workflow by:

    • Completing initial patient assessments and obtaining vital signs.
    • Reviewing presenting concerns and identifying patients requiring urgent attention.
    • Initiating clinical documentation and preparing patients for physician assessment.
    • Performing appropriate point-of-care testing within authorized scope and protocols.
    • Coordinating patient flow across designated examination rooms.
    • Assisting with procedures and other clinical requirements as appropriate.

    Comprehensive Administrative & Billing Support

Our experienced administrative and management team provides:

    • Online appointment scheduling and patient registration.
    • Health card verification and administration of uninsured patient payments.
    • MedAccess EMR access and established clinical documentation templates.
    • Physician billing support and claims management.
    • Coordination of clinical rooms, supplies, and patient flow.
    • Assistance with referrals, documentation transmission, and administrative follow-up.

Physicians are also provided with a detailed billing statement following each payment cycle, outlining submitted services, applicable billing codes, overhead deductions, and their earnings.

    Modern, Fully Equipped Clinical Environment

Our clinic offers fully equipped examination rooms, an established electronic medical record system, accessible facilities, convenient parking, and a welcoming collaborative team. We are adding more and more to the clinic as far as services and point of care testing as well.

    Why Choose Brookline?

    Strong Community Demand

Our extended-hours clinics have demonstrated growing demand from patients seeking timely care outside traditional family practice hours.

We serve patients from Bedford, Halifax, Sackville, and surrounding communities, including individuals who may not have access to a regular family physician.

    Convenient Online Booking

Unlike traditional walk-in models that rely heavily on patients arriving early or waiting in line, Brookline provides convenient online appointment booking.

This allows patients to reserve available appointments in advance while giving physicians a more organized and predictable schedule.

As demand increases, our goal is to expand physician coverage rather than unnecessarily limit access.

    Efficient Patient Flow

Our dedicated triage nurse, experienced administrative team, and established clinical workflows help maximize physician efficiency while maintaining safe, high-quality patient care.

Our operational planning typically accommodates approximately five patients per physician per hour, depending on presenting concerns and clinical complexity which works well given our clinical support model.

    Minimal Ongoing Responsibilities

Our semi-urgent clinics are designed for episodic medical concerns rather than longitudinal primary care.

We use standardized clinical documentation with the use of Heidi and communication processes to ensure relevant visit information can be forwarded securely to a patient's regular family physician when appropriate.

This supports continuity of care while minimizing unnecessary administrative follow-up for physicians providing extended-hours coverage.

Any clinically necessary follow-up, outstanding investigation, or urgent result remains subject to appropriate physician responsibility and established clinic protocols.

    Excellent Income Potential

Our extended-hours clinics provide physicians with an attractive opportunity to supplement their income through fee-for-service MSI billing, including applicable evening and weekend premium billing opportunities.

Our compensation structure is designed to recognize physician contributions while providing the nursing, administrative, billing, and operational support required for an efficient clinic.

Detailed information regarding our all inclusive overhead model, compensation, billing opportunities, clinic overhead, and typical earnings per shift is available through a confidential meeting with the CEO.

    Scope of Clinical Services

Our clinics focus on non-emergency, semi-urgent medical concerns appropriate for community-based assessment and treatment.

    Common presentations include:

    • Coughs, colds, flu-like symptoms, sore throats, and respiratory infections.
    • Ear infections, sinus concerns, and eye infections.
    • Urinary tract infections and other uncomplicated urinary symptoms.
    • Rashes, eczema, minor skin infections, and allergic reactions.
    • Minor musculoskeletal injuries, sprains, and strains.
    • Headaches, migraines, and other appropriate episodic concerns.
    • Mild gastrointestinal symptoms.
    • Other non-emergency medical concerns suitable for an extended-hours clinic.

Point-of-care testing, including rapid strep testing, urine screening, and pregnancy testing, will soon be available when clinically appropriate.

Patients requiring emergency assessment or a higher level of care will be directed to the appropriate emergency services.

    Discover the Brookline Difference

At Brookline, we believe physicians should have opportunities to increase their income without sacrificing their work-life balance or taking on unnecessary administrative responsibilities.

Our approach combines flexible scheduling, dedicated nursing support, experienced management, efficient clinical workflows, and strong community demand to create a rewarding experience for both physicians and patients.

Interested but unsure whether it's the right fit? Come try a shift!

We welcome interested physicians to experience our clinic firsthand, meet our team, and see how our extended-hours services operate before deciding whether to join our regular rotation.

    Additional Information

    Community Details

Bedford is a suburban community of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It was an independent town from 1980 to 1996. Bedford is on the northwestern end of Bedford Basin, an extension of the Halifax Harbour, which ends just before Nova Scotia Highway 102 and the Bedford Bypass, next to Lower Sackville. There is a popular walkway along much of the Bedford Basin waterfront that begins at DeWolf park, and continues as the Bedford-Sackville Connector Greenway, a crushed gravel covered trail that meanders along the Sackville River. There is an outdoor 25m pool and smaller splash pool located at the Lions Park on Shore Drive. In the summer there are numerous lakes suitable for swimming. The topography of the area limits the possible locations for soccer and football fields.  The community is currently home to six ice surfaces. Bedford is a well-established sailing community,  and is home to the Bedford Basin Yacht Club and Marina.
