Job Description
The PCT/Phlebotomist reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
Responsibilities:
- Provides patient care under the direction of a physician, physicians assistant, advanced practice nurse, and/or registered nurse.
- Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
- Performs basic nursing care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output.
- Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to nursing staff.
- Assists patients with tending to personal care and activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming and eating.
- Assists with keeping patient rooms clean and orderly.
- Performs phlebotomy according to standards and policies. Collects and labels specimens (urine, stool and sputum) accurately and according to policy.
- Identifies and transports blood/blood components and specimens using appropriate blood borne pathogen precautions. Identifies drains and tubes, empties and records drainage.
- Performs 12 lead EKG according to standards and policies.
Qualifications
Required:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Basic computer knowledge. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to assess and determine situations requiring an interpreter and to use interpreter services effectively.
- Must be flexible to scheduling changes including scheduled overtime, weekend hours, holiday and on-call.
- Physical Demands: A physical demands test provides an objective way to identify if a candidate can meet the essential tasks for the job the candidate has applied for at Northwestern Medicine. The testing protocol was established with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
- Job Role Requirement: 50 lbs lift 30 inch carry; 25 lbs 50 inch carry; Push/pull 50 lbs
Preferred:
- Previous PCT hospital experience.
- Current Nursing Assistant certification. Exception: if a nursing student, CNA is not required if two clinical rotations have been completed.
