Job Description

The Education Coordinator Histology reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

Under the direction of the AP Manager and the Program Director of the School of Histotechnology at Roosevelt University, the Education Coordinator has the responsibility and accountability for overseeing the clinical educational aspects of the program and coordinating clinical activities ensuring students are able to achieve competency in all aspects of Histotechnology.  This position facilitates the operational activities related to quality patient care and overall department function.

In addition to performing all of the duties of the Education Coordinator, a Coordinator assumes a lead role in daily operations, classroom instruction, student evaluation and record maintenance, and takes on responsibilities as assigned by the AP Manager.

This position is responsible for communication with pathologists, residents, and coordinators regarding specimen problems. The position is also required to participate in the laboratory occurrence management program.

  • Assists in the coordination of orientation programs for Histotechnology students.
  • Participates in formal and informal education, competency assessments and clinical evaluation of the staff.
  • Trains technical staff on student instruction, supervision, evaluation, and program policies and procedures.
  • Develops and facilitates training program to orient histology students as needed.
  • Provides technical assessment of job performance of histology students.
  • Monitors and tracks student survey data on histology student performance and clinical rotation area assignments.
  • Develops rapport with Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies and radiation safety standards, where applicable.
  • Participates in monthly staff meetings, provides program updates, and solicits feedback on student performance and progress. 
  • Collaborates with pathologists and clinical staff on student performance and determines corrective action as needed.
  • Provides or facilitates student guidance and academic counseling as appropriate.
  • Assists in the development and revision of program policies and procedures in relation to the clinical training aspects of the program.
  • Works with Surgical Pathology personnel to ensure adequate levels of student supervision are maintained and makes adjustments to clinical assignments as necessary.
  • Develops clinical rotation schedules ensuring equitable learning opportunities are provided.
  • Regularly works in clinical rotation areas and documents issues and / or concerns in a timely manner.
  • Coordinates and teaches select didactic and laboratory courses as assigned.
  • Participates in program informational sessions and student recruitment activities.
  • Participates in the annual student selection process for program admission.
  • Meets with the Program Director at Roosevelt University on a regular basis.
  • Performs other duties as it applies.
  • Embeds biopsy, routine surgical, and autopsy tissues per SOP.  Recognizes adequacy of processing.  Identifies and orients tissues correctly.  Documents tracking and quality issues on embedding log. 
  • Maintains specimen integrity and accurate legible specimen identification throughout all technical and clerical processes.
  • Records all documentation consistently and legibly.  Maintains manual and electronic records for easy retrieval of data as necessary.  Investigates, escalates, and documents any discrepancies or unresolved issues appropriately.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment to ensure efficient workflow and compliance with all regulatory requirements.  Cleans and disinfects laboratory areas per SOP.  Performs minor spill cleanup per SOP when necessary.
  • Monitors laboratory inventory to ensure supply levels are appropriate and adequate. Notifies appropriate coordinator promptly of any supply issues.
  • Fosters department and laboratory teamwork through effective communication.
  • Assist with data collection and analysis with regard to programmatic assessment and accreditation activities.
  • Assists with site visit coordination and other accreditation activities.

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in the biological, life sciences, medical laboratory technology, or other related field. 
  • Prior work experience in laboratory support or health related experience.
  • Computer experience with keyboard proficiency. 
  • Ability to maintain accurate and legible documentation. 
  • Familiarity with medical terminology.
  • HTL (ASCP) certification.
  • Analytical ability.
  • Excellent communication skills are required in order to coordinate and deliver patient care and effective student instruction.
  • Knowledge and ability to deliver education based upon adult learning principles.
  • Interact effectively and collaborate with others in challenging situations.
