Since opening in 1993, the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter (NWACS) has cared for more than 8,500 children in crisis from throughout the state of Arkansas. Job Description

THE POSITION:
Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter seeks an individual to serve as Teacher in grades 9-12 to play a key role in meeting the educational needs of all children assigned to his/her classroom with the assistance of a full time teaching aide while working closely with the Bentonville Public Schools special education team when appropriate.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide individualized high quality classroom instruction and oversight of the children.
  • Develop and utilize appropriate lesson plans and other activities which stimulate and encourage the educational and social development of the child.
  • Provide active teaching activitires that are tailored to each child's current educational level, individual strengths and emotional needs.
  • Directly provideday-to-day educational instruction and classroom management and work with others who also provide care for the children.
  • MOnitor and document daily the progress of all children in the classroom and take appropriate actions to increase each child's progress.
  • Assess each child assigned upon intake and determine that child's individual educational and appropriate social needs and strengths.
  • Develop and follow well organized lesoon plans.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly classroom.
  • As required, provide supervision for lunch duty, recesses, field trips, etc.
  • Maintain Arkansas Teacher's Certification.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

  • Maintains confidentiality and privacy regarding all residents' information in accordance with shelter policy and all applicable federal and state laws/regulations.
  • Carries out work tasks in a way that conforms to and supports the mission, vision, and values of the shelter as well as professional and ethical standards.
  • Establish effective professional relationships with peers, support staff, volunteers, supervisors, and other professionals.
  • Attends and participates in mandatory trainings, staff meetings, and all other events, as required.
  • Sets, maintains, and communicates appropriate personal and professional boundaries.
  • Completes all required documentation in a timely manner per agency procedures.
  • Recognizes own strengths/limitations and seeks assistance from supervisors and case managers when needed.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

  • Twenty-one years of age or older.
  • College degree in education with certifications in Algebra & English.
  • Maintain a valid Arkansas Teacher’s Certification.
  • Prefer experience in Special Education Services.
  • Prefer experience in Conscious Discipline and Trust Based Relational Intervention techniques.
  • Physical ability to use authorized techniques for management of aggressive behaviors.
  • Physical stamina and agility required to care for young, active children.
  • Must pass all criminal history and child maltreatment background checks.
  • Must submit to pre-employment drug screen as well as random drug screens when directed.
  • Valid driver's license, proof of personal automobile insurance, and acceptable driving record required to drive shelter vehicle and/or for shelter business.

  • Basic proficiency in use of computers and software.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, including but not limited to: computers, telephone systems, calculators and copiers

  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism, interpersonal skills and strong communication.

Additional Information

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Classroom to include students of various ages and educational levels.
  • Potential for unpredictable student behavior.
  • Tasks may involve walking, standing, climbing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and lifting for long periods of time both indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Potential exposure to communicable disease/contagions.
