Job Description

North Shore Health has a full time Laboratory Technical Specialist position available in the Laboratory Department. The Laboratory Technical Specialist (LTS), under the direction of the Laboratory Administrative Director (LAD) and Laboratory Medical Director (LD), is responsible for all duties as stated in the Laboratory Technical Specialist Position Description, as well as additional technical and scientific responsibilities within the hospital laboratory.

The LTS performs and assists with routine responsibilities within the General Laboratory as well as the specialty departments of Transfusion Medicine and Microbiology.  Additional duties may include, but are not limited to:  assisting with, performing, and coordinating technical and scientific duties in the General Laboratory, as well as assisting with, coordinating, and organizing Continuing Education, Competency, and new Lab Employee and student training.  In addition, the LTS assists with, performs, and coordinates technical and scientific duties within all specialty departments of the Laboratory, including Transfusion Medicine, Microbiology, and Laboratory Informatics/LIS. 

The LTS performs all job duties in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures and follows regulatory standards as stipulated by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).  Additionally, the LTS is required to follow Hospital policies and procedures, including those within the Employee Handbook. The LTS: will utilize safe laboratory practices, be required to train and oversee new employees, communicate effectively with coworkers, organize the workload, function independently and as a collaborative team member, and maintain current knowledge of laboratory principles, techniques, and equipment.  Once training and competency has been completed, the LTS does not require supervision or review of work prior to reporting patient results.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE:  Two (2) years experience as a Laboratory Generalist, two (2) years experience in Transfusion Medicine, two (2) years experience in Microbiology, and verifiable experience in basic Laboratory Informatics/LIS, advanced computer skills, and basic procedure writing/development.

EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, or equivalent, from an accredited institution.  An equivalent training program that satisfies the requirements stipulated by CLIA may be considered with the approval of the Laboratory Medical Director.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:  Current ASCP certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or equivalent certification, with approval by the Laboratory Medical Director.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE: Four (4) years experience as a Laboratory Generalist, two (2) years experience in Transfusion Medicine, two (2) years experience in Microbiology, one (1) year experience in each:  Laboratory Informatics/LIS, advanced computer skills, and procedure writing/development.

EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, or equivalent, from an accredited institution.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:  Current ASCP certification or equivalent as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT).
