Job Description

A Janitor is responsible for maintaining cleanliness throughout the North40 store, product, carry-out, or freight responsibilities as assigned, and safeguarding company assets. Position Reports to assigned supervisor or Assistant Manager. The following are primary duties of the janitor:

  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
  • Run floor machine as assigned.
  • Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming.
  • Gather and empty trash around the store.
  • Clean front windows as needed.
  • Make store repairs as assigned.
  • Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications.
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
  • Move heavy equipment and supplies either manually or by using hand trucks.
  • Remove snow from sidewalks and parking areas, using snowplows, snow blowers, and snow shovels, and spread snow melting chemicals.
  • Maintain a friendly welcoming demeanor and a professional appearance.
  • Greet guests and communicate with enthusiasm and a smile. Offer assistance and refer guests’ questions to appropriate sales associates

Qualifications

Knowledge of principles of customer service; communication techniques to convey and obtain information, proper and business appropriate use of language, basic knowledge of hand tools and power tools.  Ability to learn merchandising and product information, reading comprehension to understand products and documentation, and writing accurately to complete documentation, counting and sorting.  Ability to drive forklifts and pallet jacks, to follow directions and instructions and to do assembly.  Ability to work in inclement weather conditions.

Physical Ability: Presence at the job and ability to perform the job are essential functions.  Merchandising, stocking, and customer assistance is physically demanding, including but not limited to: use of arm, shoulder, abdominal and lower back muscles to support repeated or continuous bending, stooping, and lifting as well as climbing ladders and stairs while carrying loads on a repetitive basis. Requires: Lifting up to 55 lbs. frequently from floor to waste, to stock feed for instance and to a height 60” occasionally; reaching above shoulder height with up to 25-35 lbs. occasionally; carrying up to 55 lbs. for distances up to 200 feet and reaching with up to 25-35 lbs. occasionally; spending up to 100% of work time, other than breaks, standing and moving, climbing and kneeling on concrete or hard surfaces; use of ladders and rolling staircases. Note: Merchandise is stocked high in all departments so reaching above shoulders can be repetitive.
