Job Description
We are seeking a Reporter to join a newly formed team within the Metro mastheads, working across The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Brisbane Times, and WAtoday. This role is designed to identify and create stories that attract new digital audiences, from trending topics to evergreen content. You’ll play a key part in shaping content strategies that resonate with new readers and expand our online reach.
The successful candidate will be a multi-skilled journalist with the ability to write with authority across a range of topics, who can identify engaging story angles and use a variety of storytelling formats.
In this role you will:
- Create high-quality, independent journalism aimed at attracting new digital audiences.
- Develop original content ideas across trending topics, news cycles, and evergreen stories.
- Demonstrate strong news judgement and in-depth knowledge of current affairs to create compelling, relevant stories.
- Ensure all content meets the highest standards of accuracy, ethics, and editorial quality.
- Work closely with various teams across The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, National, and other Metro teams to create cohesive, audience-focused stories.
- Write well-researched, balanced, and engaging reports that are clear, accurate, and conform to editorial style.
- Identify opportunities to reach under-served audience segments
- Ensure all copy meets legal requirements and editorial guidelines.
- Meet agreed audience benchmarks for your content.
Qualifications
What we would like to see:
- Proven experience in journalism with a solid understanding of how to engage digital audiences.
- The ability to identify compelling stories and angles that will capture the attention of new readers.
- Strong track record of developing and pitching original content ideas.
- The ability to work seamlessly with cross-functional teams across multiple news platforms.
- Strong time management skills with the ability to work to tight deadlines.
