Job Description

This role can be performed from either our Nine head office in Sydney or Melbourne.

Nine is currently seeking applications for the role of National Editor to support our metro news teams across The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Brisbane Times and WAtoday newsrooms.

This is a critical senior Editorial role in the business whose remit will be to lead our outstanding national editorial teams across World, Federal Politics, Business and Environment.

With a history dating back 190 years and boasting both the number one and two most-read mastheads in the country in The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, we are clearly Australia’s most prestigious news organisation. We have a rich history of courageous, quality and unbiased journalism. In 2021, we remain in a stronger position than ever with readership and subscriber numbers continuing to grow.

The heart of this role is to lead the National team and work closely with topic editors to ensure outstanding results for our readers. Specifically, this will involve:

  • Providing editorial leadership and direction across World, Federal Politics, Business and Environment units
  • Ensuring journalistic output from National teams aligns with the broader strategy of digital and subscriber growth
  • Set goals across the function and use data and metrics to measure results
  • Shape and drive coverage of major national news stories and promote agenda-setting journalism
  • Liaise closely with The Age and Sydney Morning Herald Editors to ensure national coverage aligns with and supports broader coverage across the mastheads
  • Identify new and innovative projects and initiatives to support editorial excellence and subscriber growth/engagement
  • Drive new projects as required

Qualifications

For the position of National Editor, we are looking for a candidate with excellent journalistic credentials, strong leadership qualities and the ability to make great decisions.

We are looking for someone who can foster a strong team culture, values collaboration and has the vision to create agenda-setting journalism.

You will have experience leading editorial units and teams, experience with national-level news breaking and the ability to translate strategic decisions to operational outcomes.

Nine supports flexible working arrangements, subject to the needs of individual jobs.  Please note that this role will require some regular work on evenings and on weekends as required.
