Job Description

The Sydney Morning Herald is looking for a passionate, energetic and committed Deputy Sports Editor to help drive the sports news agenda of this masthead. The successful candidate will be tasked with driving the Herald’s day-to-day sports coverage, commissioning and editing the work of some of Australia’s premier sports reporters. 

Applicants should be able to demonstrate extensive sports knowledge and experience, preferably across both reporting and commissioning. A strong interest in digital sports journalism is also a key requirement, preferably with some experience operating in a digitally-focused environment. 

A proven ability to work quickly, hit deadlines and manage staff and their workload is also crucial. We expect the work hours to be driven by major sports events, but on deck early enough to brief 9am morning news conference. An interest in analysing readership data and optimising content for print and digital audiences is also important.
