This role will report to General Counsel – Global Labor and Employment Law.

Job Summary

NIQ is looking for a thoughtful, collaborative, and skilled employment lawyer to join as Senior Counsel, Labor and Employment, with primary responsibility for labor and employment legal matters in Americas (U.S., Canada, and LATAM).

Responsibilities

  • Provide pragmatic advice and guidance on employment matters, including but not limited to hiring, performance management, discipline, reductions in force, restrictive covenants, leaves of absence, accommodations, and incentive compensation plans
  • Drive compliance with labor and employment laws and regulations, including the development, implementation, interpretation, and maintenance of employment-related HR and operational policies and procedures, as well as development and deployment of related trainings
  • Advise and help resolve complex/sensitive employment matters through pre-dispute resolution and/or positioning the company for potential employment litigation
  • Monitor developments in employment law areas in the Americas and proactively identify legal concepts that Human Resources Business Partners need to understand and apply into practice; develop and provide training to them and other impacted cross-functional functions
  • Distill complex legal issues into workable frameworks or reference guides for Human Resources Business Partners
  • Collaborate and influence stakeholders through oral and written communications
  • Partner with HR to develop and execute LATAM labor strategy and implementation of union avoidance best practices as necessary
  • Cost-effectively manage outside counsel in all employment litigated matters
  • Partner with Employee Relations and Compliance on corporate investigations
  • Work on special projects related to employment law, which could include areas outside of the Americas jurisdiction

Requirements

  • Must be a self-starter and finisher with the ability to efficiently complete projects with minimal oversight
  • Hands-on, roll up your sleeves attitude, with drive to work through challenges
  • Comfort with a fast-paced environment in a complex global organization
  • Project management aptitude and experience to develop creative, proactive, and practical solutions to mitigate legal risks in support of the business.
  • Excellent risk identification and mitigation skills; ability to problem solve and think strategically in ambiguous situations
  • Decisive attitude based on educated risk evaluation
  • Ability to distill complex legal concepts and issues in a manner to make them understandable to non-legal specialists
  • Ability to work collaboratively across multiple functions, regions and cultures to implement complex programs, to develop creative, proactive, and practical solutions to mitigate legal risks in support of the business.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Confidence and experience to push for change and, know when appropriate to challenge the status quo, done in a way that will be heard and respected
  • Unquestioned integrity and ethics in business and personal conduct
  • Strong interpersonal skills; team player with a sense of humor and ability to deal effectively with individuals at all levels

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • JD from an accredited U.S. law school and admission to a state bar
  • At least 5 to 7 years’ experience practicing labor and employment law covering US, Canada and LATAM
  • Prior experience at a multinational corporation and/or international law firm for at least 4 years
  • Spanish fluency strongly preferred
