Job Description

New England Donor Services is proud to have developed a brand new position that is the first of its kind within the field of transplant that will elevate our focus on quality and make organ donation safer. Clinical cases can move very quickly and each patient provides unique, complex scenarios that need to be evaluated in real-time. The Clinical Safety Officer (CSO), reporting directly to the Sr. VP, Organ Donation Services, will work with Clinical Directors, Clinical Staff and our Quality Team to identify potential risk and issues and develop improvement initiatives.

Through a combination of direct observation of organ donor clinical activity on-site in hospital and discussions with clinical staff, the CSO will proactively identify possible safety concerns and inadequate systems that can negatively impact organs, patients and staff and will lead improvement initiatives as indicated.  

 

Primary Job Functions Include:

 

  • Travel to active clinical cases in hospitals around New England to identify, document and work with clinical staff to improve the donation process: authorization, donor testing, DRAI, clinical management, organ allocation, labeling and packaging of organs and communication

  • Collaborate with Quality Team Members using data to identify trends and risks, as well as, develop, implement and lead improvement initiatives

  • Review and investigate any quality events or near quality event and make recommendations for policy changes/staff education

  • Mentor clinical staff to improve quality initiatives and project  

  • Be a standing member in committees and attend various meetings


 

Training
Will focus on learning policies and procedures and clinical aspect before being able to apply the quality piece. For a minimum of 6 months, the CSO will work directly with Clinical Directors and the Quality Team to train up into this role The objective is to gain an understanding of normal work process and any gaps that may exist between actual practice and established procedures; to gain an understanding of the work environment and the behavioral choices made within that environment that may unknowingly increase risk; and to identify, develop and implement improvements.

 

Travel
This position is based in our Waltham office, but will travel to 14 major hospitals within New England 50 - 60% of the time. The CSO will work closely with our Clinical Directors to determine which cases to participate in. National travel is expected to attend national conferences as needed.

 

Schedule
Monday thru Friday. In the office 2 - 3 days per week. On-site 2 - 3 days per week. May work long hours when on cases, but overnights are not required.

Qualifications

Education

  • Undergraduate degree required –Bachelor’s degree preferred

  • Training in quality management and quality improvement preferred

 

Experience

  • Ideal candidates will have clinical experience working in an ICU RN, Medical Surgical RN or quality/patient safety experience in a clinical setting and Six Sigma Green Belt certification

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse, preferably in an ICU setting or equivalent organ procurement experience

  • Previous experience in quality management or quality improvement preferred

 

Certification/Licensure

  • Must maintain a valid state driver’s license and sufficient automobile insurance coverage, per resident state minimum
     

  • Licensed Registered Nurse required or equivalent organ procurement experience

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to demonstrate excellent judgement, attention to process and detail

  • Ability to discreetly, confidentially and tactfully deal with sensitive issues

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment

  • Ability to collect, analyze, and present data especially in relation to identifying and mitigating potential risk

  • Ability to travel long distances
