The Clinical Safety Officer is a brand new position at New England Donor Services!

Through a combination of direct observation of organ donor clinical activity and discussions with clinical staff, the Clinical Safety Officer (CSO) will proactively identify possible safety concerns and inadequate systems that can negatively impact organs, patients and staff and will lead improvement initiatives as indicated.  

The objective is to gain an understanding of normal work process and any gaps that may exist between actual practice and established procedures; to gain an understanding of the work environment and the behavioral choices made within that environment that may unknowingly increase risk; and to identify, develop and implement improvements. 

Primary Job Functions Include:

1. Travel to active clinical cases in hospitals around New England to identify, document and work with clinical staff to improve the donation process: authorization, donor testing, DRAI, clinical management, organ allocation, labeling and packaging of organs and communication

2. Collaborate with Quality Team Members using data to identify trends and risks, as well as, develop, implement and lead improvement initiatives

3. Review and investigate any quality events or near quality event and make recommendations for policy changes/staff education

4. Mentor clinical staff to improve quality initiatives and project  

5. Be a standing member in committees and attend various meetings

Ideal candidates will have clinical experience working in an ICU RN, Medical Surgical RN or quality/patient safety experience in a clinical setting and Six Sigma Green Belt certification.

Education

Undergraduate degree required –Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Training in quality management and quality improvement required.

Experience

Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse, preferably in an ICU setting or equivalent organ procurement experience.

Previous experience in quality management or quality improvement required.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Must maintain a valid state driver’s license and sufficient automobile insurance coverage, per resident state minimum. **This position is expected to travel 50 - 60%.

Licensed Registered Nurse required or equivalent organ procurement experience.
