Job Description

A technical writer takes a user-centred approach to making complicated technical concepts easier to understand for a specialist audience. In this role, you will focus on specialist content and software documentation, and write for technologists such as developers, technical architects, and technology leaders.

Responsibilities:

  • You will take a user-centred approach to explaining how to use government products and services to a technical audience, focusing on specialist content and software documentation
  • Working with User Researcher or carry out research or gather information from various sources to make sure the documentation is accurate.
  • Participate in product design and development meetings to provide input on documentation requirements.
  • You will have an understanding of how to use different tools, such as Microsoft word, Adobe FrameMaker, Figma, Markdown and version control tools
  • Understand the structure, design and requirement of content and then create technical documentation that explains how to use the product or service
  • You will collaborate with product managers, developers, subject matter experts and other stakeholders to understand technical concepts and translate them into clear and concise documentation.
  • Build long-term strategic relationships and communicate clearly and regularly with stakeholders
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the technologies used to build and operate digital services
  • Demonstrate experience in meeting the needs of users across a variety of channels
  • Show a deep understanding of end-to-end journeys and how content is affected within these journeys
  • Identify where journey fixes or content improvements need to be made

Qualifications

Key Skills/Experience:

  • You are great at building strong client relationships and working collaboratively across teams and organisations to deliver challenging projects to tight timescales
  • You have experience delivering in the UK public sector including working to GDS standards and passing Service Standard Assessments
  • You work with technical and business stakeholders and communicate complex business and technical challenges clearly for both audiences. You know how to manage stakeholder expectations, set direction and navigate difficult discussions.
  • Experience in consulting roles is desirable
  • Experience using documentation tools such as Microsoft Word, Figam, Adobe FrameMaker, or Markdown and version control tools such as Git .

Desirable

  • Experience using documentation tools such as Microsoft Word, Figma, Adobe FrameMaker, or Markdown and version control tools such as Git.
  • Any qualification in technical writing or related areas
  • Experience with HTML, CSS, and other web technologies
  • Familiarity with software development processes and tools as well as agile methodology
