Job Description

Position Overview:
The Near North Montessori (NNM) School Summer Camp Lifeguard (seasonal position) helps to keep summer campers safe and provides additional assistance in the pool when needed. This position will work directly with students (ages 3-14) and a team of aquatics instructors during summer camp. Hours of this position are Monday- Friday, 8:30am to 3:45pm. Summer Camp runs from June 15th through August 7th, and camp is broken into 4 sessions. Staff are required to attend 1-2 training sessions prior to June 15th. Specific Responsibilities include:

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the instruction of swim lessons to the 3 to 6 year old age group, supervise free swim for 6-14 year old age groups.

  • Actively guard and scan the pool area. 

  • Prevent injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazards in the pool and aquatics area.

  • Enforce pool rules and policies, and help to educate students and visitors about them.

  • Assist in clearing all swimmers from the water when necessary.

  • Assist students and other pool visitors in non-emergency situations.

  • Recognize and respond quickly and effectively to all emergencies, following training and facility protocols.

  • Report any unsafe conditions or equipment.

  • Assist in educating students about safe pool use and help provide swim instruction or manage pool games when appropriate.

  • Perform general pool or locker room maintenance or other tasks in the pool area as assigned.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.

Qualifications

Education/Training and Certification, Licenses, Registration Requirements:

Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED required. 

  • ARC-Lifeguarding and First Aid.

  • ARC-CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.

    • Prerequisites for American Red Cross lifeguard and rescuer trainings include a minimum age of 15 and passing certain swimming requirements.

  • Previous swimming experience and swim instruction and/or lifeguarding experience is required; preferably with 3 to 6 year old children.

  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and professionally with others.

Years of Experience

  • 1-3 years experience lifeguarding

  • Previous experience working with children

Licenses/Certifications

  • Current Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED and Lifeguard certification; Water Safety Instructor certification or equivalent

Specific Skills Required

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with safety as a top priority

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others, but able to work effectively with a great deal of autonomy

  • Demonstrated ability to provide high level of support and assistance

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to a variety of settings and environments

  • Demonstrated understanding of a child's physical, social, emotional needs
