Job Description

At NNM we are fortunate to have regular, full-time substitute teacher assistants working as floaters during the school day to support our students, faculty and classrooms. We are seeking candidates for this position who could start with us immediately for the 2024/25 school year. This position is full-time and benefit eligible.

Schedule: Monday to Friday, with scheduled working hours 8:00 am and 4:00 pm daily; with the possibility of working additional hours as needed. There will be paid time off during school breaks and holidays as scheduled during the school year.

The substitute teacher assistant supports the students, teachers and classrooms, primarily at the upper elementary level (4th to 6th grade) when there is a faculty absence or when additional resources are needed. They will work closely with their supervisor, the Academic Coach, to set up a daily schedule that meets the needs of the level they work with, and other areas as assigned.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with supervisor (Academic Coach) to set a plan for each week and day based on planned and unplanned absences or schedule changes
  • Within the assigned classroom and other learning spaces:
    • Support classroom activities, lessons and work in concert with the other classroom teachers, and ensure classroom rules are followed
    • Support students to complete work as assigned
    • Guide and manage student behavior and social dynamics in the classroom
    • Help set up, clean and maintain classroom environments
  • Review student information, emergency plans, events, lesson plans and programming regularly with faculty and supervisor
  • Work with students - supervising and guiding them appropriately during transition times, recess, arrival and dismissal when they are moving in and out of the classroom. Ensure safe and respectful transitions.
  • Communicate your observations of students to classroom teaching teams and work together to understand how to best meet students with the guidance and support they need in their day.
  • Stay connected and responsive on email and other communication channels with faculty and staff
  • Provide childcare for students as assigned on in-service days, conference days and other working days during the school year
  • Join classes during the end of year overnight trip (4 days), working closely with faculty and students for a week of outdoor education. May also be required to supervise other daytime and overnight field trips as assigned.
  • Other duties as required based on the age group, school needs, and more.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Prior experience working with elementary aged children, preferably in a school or educational setting; Montessori experience a plus
  • Reliable, flexible and able to provide a high level of support to adults and children
  • Demonstrated skills to support a diverse student population, embracing the community's anti-racist practices
  • Effective communicator, verbal and written, with children and adults
  • Able to perform duties in-person within a school environment

Additional Information

This is a full-time, benefit eligible position, starting as soon as possible. The pay for this position starts at $20 per hour; may increase with experience.
