The Department of History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies of the School of Sciences and Humanities includes 18 members and offers a major in History as well as minors in both History and Philosophy & Religious Studies. Job Description

The Department of History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies in the School of Sciences and
Humanities at Nazarbayev University in Astana, Kazakhstan, invites applications for an open-
rank position in the modern history of Central Eurasia (broadly defined). Time period and area of specialization are open, but preference will be given to candidates specializing in the study of Central Asia from the 19th century to the present.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to a team-taught course on the History of Kazakhstan, to offer other undergraduate and graduate-level courses in their area(s) of specialization, and to advise graduate students in the MA and PhD programs in Eurasian Studies.

We especially welcome applications from candidates whose research and teaching address themes including environmental history, public history, heritage studies, digital humanities, gender studies, world history, comparative colonialism, and other areas that complement those of the department’s current faculty.

The position is available from August 2024. Contracts are for a period of three years and are renewable upon a positive review.

Qualifications

Successful applicants for Assistant Professor will have been awarded a PhD by the start date in August 2024.

They should demonstrate potential for excellence in research, teaching, and
service. Successful senior level applicants will be expected to have a demonstrated track record of excellence in each of these areas. The teaching load is 2+2 with TA support for large classes.
