The Department of Languages, Linguistics and Literature of the School of Sciences and Humanities (SSH) at Nazarbayev University is considering applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Job Description

Area of specialization for this position can be viewed as open, however, the ideal candidate will have their research and teaching expertise in either East or South Asian literature, helping to enhance the students' understanding of the specificity of the cultural position of Kazakhstan as a hub of East-West cultural encounters. This faculty member is also expected to contribute to the MA program in Eurasian Studies, where MA students have in previous years conducted research on the interplay of East Asian culture and contemporary Kazakhstani literary and artistic production. The successful candidate will have demonstrated commitment to program-building and student mentoring, and will be able to complement and build off of our department’s diverse strengths, ranging from comparative literature to comparative-historical linguistics and language typology, from cultural productions to discourse analysis, from language-mind-cognition to foreign language learning.

The Department of Languages, Linguistics and Literatures (LLL) at SSH currently has eleven full-time and 5 part-time faculty representing a variety of disciplines in the domain of languages, linguistics and comparative literature. The LLL Department is one of the fastest growing major programs in the School. The LLL Department’s program is also integrated into the graduate program in Eurasian Studies, an interdisciplinary MA and PhD program, and thus, an ideal candidate will have an opportunity to contribute to the Eurasian Studies both in research and teaching.

Qualifications

We seek a candidate with an exemplary and ongoing record of research, demonstrated excellence in teaching, commitment to active involvement in the life of the Department and the School, and a capacity to advise undergraduate and graduate students in the wide thematic area of literature, and to mentor senior undergraduates in application to graduate programs.

This is a three-year appointment with the possibility of renewal, it carries a 2/2 teaching load.
