Job Description

1.  The Laboratory Assistant will fulfil the following functions:

1) ensure overall smooth operation of the Laboratory;

2) manage access to the lab and to the lab equipment for researchers and students, both in the lab and outside, when necessary;

3) assist with the procurement of software, technology, lab material, and furniture;

4) regularly check if lab equipment are functional and ensure maintenance and repair of equipment in accordance with developed instructions and other technical documentation;

5) manage the use of laboratory supplies and equipment;

6) assist in cataloguing entire teaching collection (e.g., labelling skeletons and creating Excel database for future use) and 3-D scanning collection;

7) assist in set up and take down of Lab activities for various courses; 

8) assist faculty with research tasks that require the use of the lab and lab equipment;

9) assist and train students on the use of the lab equipment; and support other related teaching and research tasks as needed;

10) ensure that the lab is ready for laboratory classes,  monitor the safety of laboratory equipment, devices, technical and visual educational means and other resources;    

11) coordinate students’ activities when performing laboratory and practical works, when using laboratory equipment, devices, technical and visual educational means and other resources in the lab;   

12) plan and prepare requests for required laboratory materials and equipment,   consumables, reagents, etc.;

13) conduct briefings on safe and proper use of equipment by persons  authorized to work in laboratories, with the note in relevant register;    

14) monitor compliance with safety regulations and instructions for practical and laboratory works execution, materials and equipment, reagents and biomaterials use by students;  

15) record all accidents, incidents (minor and major) in the incidents register, notifying  the School’s management;

16) assist with laboratory property inventory;

17) take on material responsibility for assigned assets;

18) support other research and teaching – related tasks in the Lab;

19) assist with assignments of the Chair and Head of the School and University management within his/her duties and authorities;

20) participation in identification, evaluation, management and monitoring of risks within the framework of supervised direction;

21) timely and proper fulfillment of other orders of the Head of the School and the management of the University within the framework of his/her responsibilities and powers.

22) Help with providing teaching assistance to lab-related courses in Anthropology where necessary

2.       In order to fulfill abovementioned functions, Laboratory Assistant executes following duties:

1) timely and properly execution of tasks of the Chair and Head of the School and the University`s management;

2) observe the requirements of the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the University`s internal documents;

3) conscientiously  perform job duties;

4) strictly respect labor and performance discipline;

5) strictly comply with occupational health and safety instructions;

6) observe provision of the University`s mandatory internal documents;

7) in case of dismissal or transfer to another position –pass all paper and digital information, to another person, specified by the Head, under act of acceptance-transfer, and submit the inventory assets to the accountable officers of the University.

Qualifications

Preferred specializations:

BA or MA in Anthropology or related field and with experience in Archaeology.
