Job Description

Description of Responsibilities

Reporting to the Vice President of Communications, crafts and implements robust communications to elevate public interest in the Nashville Symphony’s mission, programs, and people and to support institutional objectives and revenue goals.  Works with all administrative departments to drive storytelling and create content across earned and owned media platforms including for the website, program book, media campaigns, social media, email and newsletter marketing, and other external communications.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Media Relations

  • With Vice President of Communications, cultivate relationships with local press to generate news coverage to advance the Nashville Symphony’s earned and contributed revenue, education and community engagement, and other institutional goals.
  • Write and disseminate press releases and media alerts; maintain media contact lists and organize contacts for broad and targeted PR campaigns.
  • Actively invite press and influencers to cover concerts and events; with Vice President of Communications and in collaboration with marketing and artistic department colleagues, schedule and plan media events, including press conferences or season launches and press tours.
  • Manage and respond to requests for general information, photos and other assistance from members of the media, public, and Nashville Symphony staff.
  • Liaise with external PR consultants as needed.
  • With Marketing & Communications Coordinator, catalog, maintain records of, and report media coverage and clippings to key stakeholders and repost on social media.
  • Facilitate media interviews for artists, musicians, organizational leadership; with Vice President of Communications, craft institutional messaging and speaking points;
  • Assist Ticketing department with responses to complaints and other customer service questions.

Content Creation for Owned Platforms

  • With Artistic, Education & Community Engagement, Marketing, Development colleagues and Executive Leadership, keep a finger on the pulse of the organization’s annual programming and initiatives to develop and execute storytelling over owned platforms (website, program book, social media, etc.) that demonstrates the Nashville Symphony’s mission as Music City’s ambassadors of classical music and its local, regional, national, and international relevance and unique contributions to the orchestra field. 
  • In coordination with colleagues (in particular, the Social Media Manager), create and procure original and organic video, photography, and written content to advance institutional objectives; with Vice President Communications, Vice President of Marketing, and Art Director, assess annual photography and videography needs and hire photographers/videographers to continually refresh assets;
  • Work cross-departmentally to ensure the Orchestra’s program books, website, and other in-house publications and platforms reflect the needs and priorities of all internal stakeholders, are well-written and edited, and provide insight into the artists’ (or leadership’s) vision while reinforcing the organization’s mission, vision and values.
  • Ensure that all content maintains a consistent voice and is factually accurate; establish and maintain practices and protocols that yield the highest standards of excellence;
  • Spearhead the timeline and production of the institution’s electronic newsletters. Work cross-departmentally to plan, create, and commission content that furthers institutional imperatives; work collaboratively with Director of Digital Graphics to implement.
  • Create and maintain an “evergreen” press kit and website pages with Nashville Symphony core information including boilerplates, history, recording history and catalog + GRAMMY wins + nominations, artist and leadership bios and photos, education and engagement program information, etc.
  • Supervising the Marketing & Communications Coordinator, and in collaboration with marketing and communications colleagues, create and maintain an annual season content system accessible to colleagues that includes artist bio, photo, and video assets and credits; program background information.
  • Assist in writing and editing marketing copy for website, brochures, social media, and advertising.

Social Media

  • In supervision of the Social Media Manager, and in coordination cross-departmentally, create and implement a social media strategy that supports institutional initiatives, including revenue generation, and maximizes results over known and emerging platforms
  • Cultivate engaging video and storytelling assets that generate single ticket and subscription revenue, support fundraising, illuminate mission-driven initiatives, and extend brand reach.
  • Ensure a balanced mix of organic to sales content, cultivating user-generated and interactive content, blog posts, videos, and more.

Departmental Duties

  • Serve as a departmental representative at concerts and events, supervising media, photographers and pre-concert activities as needed

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises the Social Media Manager.
  • Co-supervises the Marketing & Communications Coordinator.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent preferred

Experience

Essential: Three to five years of experience in a manager- or director-level position in a Communications or Marketing department at a symphony orchestra, performing arts center, music school, or similar institution preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have exceptional writing, oral communications, and storytelling skills
  • Must have deep knowledge of classical music
  • Stellar organizational skills with high attention to detail and ability to schedule priorities to maximize efficiency and institutional goals.
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work with a broad spectrum of personalities and to exhibit patience and understanding.
  • Ability to work as a team member with a positive, helpful attitude in developing creative response and solutions to needs and issues. 
  • Ability to work flexible and varied hours, including nights, weekends and/or holidays.
