Job Description

  • 75% of this position will focus on Accelerando, the Nashville Symphony’s music education initiative designed to create career pathways for dedicated young musicians from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Duties include scheduling activities, communicating with students and their families, and working with community partners. This role will also be responsible for recruiting prospective students and running annual auditions for the program.
  • 25% of this position will focus on other Education and Community Engagement programs of the Nashville Symphony. Duties include assisting with on-site execution of Young People’s Concerts, pre-concert activities for Family Series concerts, Sectionals and other programs, along with tracking data on program impact and fulfilling other administrative tasks.  
  • Accelerando Program Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Embrace the Nashville Symphony’s mission, intention, and work in regards to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging, and take an active role to create meaningful impact for the children and adults of our community.
  • Serve as primary Education and Community Engagement representative to coordinate scheduling and execution of Accelerando. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, auditions, recruitment of students, lessons, juries, performances, and advisory meetings.
  • Establish and develop relationships with the students and families to guide them through the complexities of the program.
  • Establish and develop relationships with musicians/Accelerando faculty to assist with instruction design, faculty selection, and performance feedback.
  • Establish and develop working relationships with key community partners, including Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt, Metro Nashville Public Schools, Conexión Américas, Choral Arts Link, and local teaching personnel.
  • Support the Education and Community Engagement Department in communication efforts to various constituent groups and cultivate relationships with schools, colleges, fellow nonprofit organizations and other institutions.
  • Create text and reservation forms for all Accelerando pages on the website, and update as necessary throughout the season.
  •  Assist in the preparation of publications and promotional materials, perform routine research, and compile statistical data as needed.
  • Monitor and respond to our Accelerando e-mail address.
  • Organize and maintain program databases, manage program files and prepare payroll for Accelerando teachers, and submit to the department VP for approval.

Other Education and Community Engagement Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Together with the Education and Community Engagement team, perform occasional educational programming/event duties, including but not limited to, pre-concert activities for Family Series concerts, Young People’s Concerts, Ensembles in the Schools, Sectionals, Open Dress Rehearsals, Chamber Music Series, Curb Concerto Competition, off-site instrument petting zoos, and after-school activities.
  • Assist the department in tracking data for all Education and Community Engagement activities by updating and maintaining the department database.
  • Process invoices for the department, including but not limited to bus reimbursement requests.
  • Assist in the creation of visual tools for the department, such as brochures, PowerPoint presentations and curricula.
  • Together with the Education and Community Engagement team, assist in updating registration databases, assigning seating charts, booking volunteers, assisting with pre- and post-event activities, and assisting with attendee communication.



  • Bachelor’s degree in music, arts administration / management and/or education, or equivalent combination of knowledge and experience.  


  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience working as a music educator or performer; working knowledge of school systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of music education, music education research, local education and performing arts initiatives are preferred.
  • Must have strong competency with Microsoft Office products (Windows, Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and have the capacity to learn new software application programs as required.
  • Fluency in Spanish or other commonly spoken languages in Middle Tennessee is preferred.
  • Effective and efficient written and oral communication skills.
  • Stellar organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to schedule priorities to maximize efficiency and institutional goals.
  • Ability to administer multiple projects simultaneously and work under precise deadlines.
  • Must be able to work under pressure and with a broad spectrum of personalities, exhibiting patience and understanding.
  • Knowledge of symphonic repertoire and instrumentation is preferred and integral to the position.
  • Ability to work in a deadline-oriented environment as a team member, with a positive, helpful attitude in developing creative responses and solutions to needs and issues.
  • Ability to work independently and use independent judgment while keeping supervisor informed of work activity and issues.
  • Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and create complex reports and documents.
  • Multi-tasking skills and the confident ability to prioritize are essential.
  • Ability to maintain the strictest of confidence is essential.
