One of Tennessee’s largest and longest-running nonprofit performing arts organizations, the Nashville Symphony has been an integral part of the Music City sound since 1946. Led by music director Giancarlo Guerrero, the 83-member ensemble performs 170 concerts annually, with a focus on contemporary American orchestral music. Education and community engagement have been at the core of the Nashville Symphony’s mission since its founding. Each year the organization reaches 60,000 children and adults with more than 20 free or low-cost programs, including Young People’s Concerts for K-12 students, sectional lessons with band and orchestra students and free Community Concerts.

Schermerhorn Symphony Center, the orchestra’s home since 2006, is widely considered one of the world’s finest acoustical venues. Named in honor of former music director Kenneth Schermerhorn and located in the heart of Nashville’s booming downtown.

Job Description

Program Overview: Accelerando is an intensive education program designed to prepare gifted young students from under represented ethnic communities for pursuing music at the collegiate level and beyond.  Accelerando seeks to create professional opportunities for these students by providing them with instruction, mentorship, performance experience and assistance with applying for music schools.

 Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as primary Education and Community Engagement representative to coordinate scheduling and execution of Accelerando, which includes, but is not limited to, auditions, recruitment of students and faculty, lessons, juries, performances, and advisories
  • Establish and develop relationships with the students and families to guide them through the complexities of the program
  • Establish and develop relationships with internal constituents and with key community partners including Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt, Metro Nashville Public Schools, Conexión Américas, Choral Arts Link, and local teaching personnel
  • Support Education and Community Engagement Department in communication efforts to various constituent groups and cultivate relationships with schools, colleges, etc…
  • Create text and reservation forms for all Accelerando pages on the NSO website, and update as necessary throughout the season
  • Assist in the preparation of publications and promotional materials, perform routine research, compile statistical data as needed
  • Monitor and respond to “[email protected]” e-mail address
  • Organize and maintain program databases, manage program files, prepare payroll for Accelerando, and submit to the department Director for approval
  • Provide general administrative support to Education and Community Engagement programs as needed
  • Adhere to all rules and regulations set forth in Collective Bargaining Agreement

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience working as a music educator or performer
  • Bachelor’s degree in music, arts administration / management and/or education, or equivalent combination of knowledge and experience
  • Knowledge of school systems; knowledge of local education and performing arts initiatives preferred
  • Understanding of music education tools, research and classroom practices
  • Knowledge of symphonic repertoire and instrumentation required
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred
  • Effective and efficient written and verbal communications skills
  • Stellar organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to schedule priorities
  • Ability to administer multiple projects simultaneously and work under precise deadlines
  • Ability to work under pressure and with a broad spectrum of personalities
  • Ability to read, analyze, interpret and create complex reports and documents
  • Ability to maintain the strictest of confidence
