One of Tennessee’s largest and longest-running nonprofit performing arts organizations, the Nashville Symphony has been an integral part of the Music City sound since 1946. Led by music director Giancarlo Guerrero, the 83-member ensemble performs 170 concerts annually, with a focus on contemporary American orchestral music. It is one of the most active recording orchestras in the U.S. and has earned a total of 13 GRAMMY® Awards and 24 nominations.

Education and community engagement have been at the core of the Nashville Symphony’s mission since its founding. Each year the organization reaches 60,000 children and adults with more than 20 free or low-cost programs, including Young People’s Concerts for K-12 students, sectional lessons with band and orchestra students and free Community Concerts.

Schermerhorn Symphony Center, the orchestra’s home since 2006, is widely considered one of the world’s finest acoustical venues. Named in honor of former music director Kenneth Schermerhorn and located in the heart of Nashville’s booming downtown.

In addition to its classical and education programming, the Nashville Symphony offers a wide variety of performances, including pop, rock, jazz, country and family concerts. Schermerhorn Symphony Center has become an in-demand venue for artists including Sheryl Crow, Tony Bennett, Diana Ross, Willie Nelson, Alabama, and Boyz II Men, all of whom have performed with the Nashville Symphony. The orchestra also performs regularly at Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheater.

Job Description

Position Overview: The Human Resources and Equity Manager plays a key role in implementing the full range of human resources policies and procedures at the Nashville Symphony, with a focus on supporting the institution’s commitment to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB). The scope of this position is dedicated to ensuring that the Nashville Symphony provides a healthy, high-functioning culture for employees, while also helping to fulfill the institution’s commitment to becoming a more inclusive workplace that is representative of the community it serves.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the execution of the organization’s long-range Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB) plan to enact equitable and inclusionary practices and policies at all levels of the Nashville Symphony Association by helping to foster inclusive recruitment and hiring practices, providing logistical support in community engagement activities, and advising on the strategic direction of the organization’s EDIB work
  • Serve as a contributing member of the organization’s EDIB team
  • Oversee many aspects of the recruitment and selection process to attract and identify a diverse and talented workforce; responsibilities include creating and posting job announcements for all open positions, screening and reviewing all applications, providing hiring managers with recommendations of top candidates, communicating with job applicants and coordinating interviews
  • Conduct all part-time new hire orientations as well as full-time new hire orientations when needed; process and submit all new hire paperwork
  • Plan and execute training and workshops for employees and organizational constituencies to promote growth and understanding
  • Manage benefit administration by communicating insurance options and plan details to employees, submitting all enrollments, plan changes and/or terminations, ensuring the Payroll and AP Manager has the correct payroll deductions for participants and handling employee benefit questions and issues (medical, dental, life insurance, long term disability, short term disability, vacation/sick/personal time, Flex Spending, parking, etc..)
  • Plan and facilitate monthly employee engagement activities including all staff meetings, annual holiday party, health fair, etc…
  • Assist VP of HR in the strategic planning process for each upcoming season by developing department goals, objectives and processes
  • Assist VP of HR in all aspects of the performance management process, including annual priority setting, managerial effectiveness survey review and employee evaluation oversight
  • Assist VP of HR in the administration of the compensation program including completion of salary surveys and updating pay grades and salary ranges
  • Oversee Internship Program by posting openings, attending university career fairs, conducting intern orientations and ensuring interns receive a beneficial learning experience
  • Establish positive relationships with employees, benefit brokers and providers
  • Assist the VP of HR in the resolution of sensitive employee relations matters
  • Coordinate termination process by ensuring all necessary forms are provided to exiting employees, all organizational property is returned, all benefits are terminated and all remaining time, vacation and/or severance is submitted to the A/P Manager and Payroll Manager
  • Complete and file the EEO-1 report annually
  • Complete and submit all employment verification request forms
  • Responsible for upkeep and dissemination of policy manuals and HR forms
  • Responsible for timely filing of all information that must be placed in an employee’s personnel file(s)
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree, preferably with an emphasis in an area that is applicable to Human Resources; SHRM or HRCI Certification required; Masters Degree preferred
  • Minimum of three to five years of Human Resource experience, including preparation and implementation of equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives; or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Knowledge of primary human resource functions including employment law, strategy, workforce management, learning and development, total rewards and risk management
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the company
  • Ability to analyze challenges involving employees and offer solutions based upon best practice and research
  • Ability to demonstrate agility and expertise when supporting change initiatives
  • Ability to provide clear, concise information in verbal, written and electronic formats
  • Ability to actively listen and provide thoughtful feedback in appropriate situations
  • Ability to value and consider varying perspectives and backgrounds
  • Ability to act with personal, professional and behavioral integrity 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products, applicant tracking systems and ability to quickly learn new software application programs
