NEC Care, part of the NEC Health division, delivers the national diabetic eye screening programme. Our mission, vision and values are to provide people-centric services that aim to improve the health and wellbeing of those we serve by working to achieve excellence in service delivery.

Newcastle upon Tyne DESP provides retinal screening clinics and image grading to people with diabetes.  We are commissioned by Public Health England to provide retinal screening on behalf of the NHS and our service is compliant with the National Service Framework (NSF) and National Screening Committee (NSC) guidance, standards, and objectives.

Job Description

An opportunity has arisen to join the North of Tyne and Gateshead eye screening programme. We are looking for someone to join the screening team covering clinics throughout our Newcastle. Gateshead, Northumberland and North Tyneside areas

We are particularly keen to hear from people who can give an immediate start.

You will be screening & grading to an advanced level to assess for diabetic retinopathy, as well as proactively mentoring junior staff. We`ll need you to be empathetic and able to talk to patients about their images daily; as well as assist the team leaders with patient queries.

You will be working largely unsupervised in a pressured environment, so a cool head is essential! All in all, we want you to be patient focused, caring about our patients and being passionate about always delivering an exceptional service.

This role will be based across Knowsley, St Helens, Halton & Warrington, so a full UK driving licence and flexibility is essential.

Our team

Working with the management team, you`ll be helping to mentor and support our screener/graders to ensure they understand and learn everything they need to complete the screening diploma and deliver an exceptional service to our patients.

Qualifications

You must be a qualified Screener/Grader with experience of grading to high standard (arbitration level is desirable). We want to make sure you are set for success; this isn`t all about your skills and that is why we would love to talk to you even if perhaps you don`t fit all the below.

  • Grading to at least secondary level, with a willingness to develop higher level grading, OCT and SLB skills
  • Patient focused with brilliant interpersonal skills
  • History of assessing/training staff
  • Organised and able to prioritise tasks
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Able to work under pressure
  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs including grades A-C in English, Maths, and a Science subject or equivalent
  • A full driving licence and your own transport

Additional Information

Candidates must be able to demonstrate a pre-existing right to work and travel within the UK. Documentary evidence will be required.
