Job Description
NBCUniversal is one of the few places where applied generative AI meets proprietary content at meaningful scale: film, television, news, sports, and live production pipelines that create genuinely hard and interesting problems for AI to solve. The AI Content & Media Product team within Operations & Technology builds agentic AI products that integrate directly into how NBCU creates, produces, and delivers content.
We’re hiring a Lead AI Builder to join the team as a senior, hands-on technical builder. You will write production-quality code, rapidly prototype new GenAI capabilities (text, image, audio, video), and turn them into integrated workflows used across the company. You will also operate as a player/coach: mentoring builders, occasionally leading small delivery pods, and raising the bar for how the team ships responsible AI products.
This role partners closely with AI Product Managers. The Builder owns technical delivery and architecture; the PM owns product strategy and stakeholder ownership. Candidates who have operated in tight PM/Builder pairs on AI products will be especially well-suited.
Key Responsibilities:
- Technical Delivery & Prototyping
- Build rapid prototypes (web apps, scripts, automations, proof-of-concepts) to validate GenAI-driven experiences for media and content workflows
- Write and review code across the stack (frontend, backend, APIs, data integrations) with an emphasis on maintainability, observability, and secure-by-design practices
- Design and implement integrations with internal platforms and external vendor APIs (LLMs, image/video generation, speech, vector databases, orchestration tools)
- Translate ambiguous problems into technical approaches: architecture diagrams, data flows, API contracts, and working increments that can be demoed early and often
- Evaluate model and system tradeoffs (quality, latency, cost, privacy, IP risk, vendor constraints) and implement pragmatic mitigations (guardrails, caching, fallbacks, human-in-the-loop)
- Define and run evaluation approaches for GenAI features (offline metrics, golden sets, human review loops) to improve quality and reduce regressions
- Harden prototypes into pilot/production services when appropriate, including automated tests, CI/CD, monitoring, and documentation
- Technical Leadership & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Partner with the AI Product Manager and business stakeholders to shape high-impact build opportunities, define success metrics, and sequence experiments into an executable backlog
- Work directly with platform, security, and data teams to ensure solutions meet enterprise requirements (identity, access controls, logging, retention, data handling)
- Communicate clearly through artifacts such as technical specs, README-style docs, diagrams, demos, and concise status updates
- Lead small delivery pods (2–5 builders) on individual prototype or pilot efforts: clarifying scope, unblocking execution, and maintaining engineering quality
- Innovation & Enablement
- Stay current on the GenAI ecosystem (models, tooling, agentic workflows, multimodal systems) and rapidly assess applicability to media and content use cases
- Create reusable templates, reference architectures, and starter kits to accelerate future builds
- Coach the team on modern build practices (API-first thinking, component reuse, automation, eval-driven development for GenAI) through pairing, code reviews, and internal demos
- Contribute to onboarding and interview loops, fostering a culture of learning and responsible experimentation
What Success Looks Like in 6 Months:
- At least one prototype shipped into pilot use within an NBCU business unit
- Reusable patterns (eval harnesses, API wrappers, prompt/tooling templates) established and adopted by the team
- 2–3 builders mentored, with measurable lift in engineering practices across the pod
Qualifications
Requirements:
- 12+ years building software with hands-on coding experience, including shipping customer-facing or internal products to production
- Demonstrated end-to-end ownership: prototype → iterate → productionize → operate services with real users
- Hands-on experience integrating and evaluating GenAI capabilities (LLMs, image/video generation, speech) via APIs/SDKs, including prompt/tool orchestration and evaluation techniques
- Working proficiency with full-stack technologies: TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, Node.js, React, REST/GraphQL, and SQL or NoSQL data stores
- Strong ability to turn ambiguous requirements into working software, clear interfaces, and practical documentation for technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience mentoring builders and/or leading small delivery teams without requiring heavy people management
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience
Desired Characteristics:
- Experience with Media & Entertainment workflows: content lifecycles, metadata, and media supply chains
- Working knowledge of agentic AI architectures and multimodal systems
- Knowledge of security, privacy, and responsible AI practices: data handling, IP/copyright sensitivity, model risk, basic threat modeling
- Experience operating in tight PM/Builder pairs on AI products
- Player/coach orientation: enjoys building directly while guiding others through feedback and lightweight team leadership
- Builder mindset: self-starter who takes ideas from zero to one, iterates quickly, and learns new tools/models as the landscape evolves
Additional Requirements:
- Hybrid: This position currently has a hybrid schedule, which requires contributing from the office a minimum of four days per week. The Company reserves the right to change in-office requirements at any time.
This position is eligible for company sponsored benefits, including medical, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and a variety of other discounts and perks.
