Job Description

Universal Products & Experiences is seeking a talented, highly collaborative and experienced in-house commercial lawyer to partner with our Consumer Products businesses across APAC.  As a part of the Business & Legal Affairs team, you will provide legal support and advice to category and creative teams across our Asia Pacific offices and work collaboratively with other legal teams in London and Los Angeles.  The role will also focus on drafting and negotiating contracts related to consumer product licensing agreements, retail/marketing campaigns, design/asset creation and other services arrangements. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, negotiate, and manage a high volume of intellectual property licenses, service agreements, and other legal documents related to the licensing, distribution, promotion, and marketing of toys, apparel, books, and consumer goods.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including commercial category management, product development, creative, and finance.
  • Act as a key liaison between business stakeholders and internal corporate functions, including tax, compliance, intellectual property/trademark, privacy, and litigation.
  • Prepare ad-hoc contracts and legal documents to address evolving business needs.
  • Manage legal communications with external partners to facilitate deal closures and resolve outstanding issues efficiently.
  • Assist in reviewing, refining, and updating legal templates and agreements as required.
  • Take on additional legal and business projects as required.

 

    Qualifications

    Basic Requirements:

    • Current Australian legal practicing certificate combined with post-qualification experience (PQE) in an in-house legal team or law firm, focusing on commercial matters.
      • Solicitors/lawyers with active practicing certificates from other common-law jurisdictions may be considered if they have significant in-house legal experience within a media company.
    • Strong commercial and transactional legal experience, preferably within a global entertainment studio or media & entertainment company and ideally handling inbound and/or outbound licensing agreements.
    • Excellent drafting skills with strong attention to detail and able to handle a heavy volume of drafting assignments with accuracy.
    • Exceptional time management and organizational abilities, with a proactive and self-motivated approach.
    • Proven ability to provide practical, accurate, and timely legal advice.
    • A collaborative, reliable, and responsive team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Solid understanding of intellectual property and contract law.
    • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships across departments, geographies, and time zones.

    Desired Characteristics :

    • Commercially astute with strong problem-solving capabilities.
    • Familiarity with legal software and tools such as DocuSign, DMS, and Salesforce.
    • Adaptability and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
