Comcast NBCUniversal has announced its intent to create a new publicly traded company ('Versant') comprised of most of NBCUniversal's cable television networks, including USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and Golf Channel along with complementary digital assets Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow, GolfPass, and SportsEngine. The well-capitalized company will have significant scale as a pure-play set of assets anchored by leading news, sports and entertainment content. The spin-off is expected to be completed during 2025.
Job Description
NBC News is seeking an experienced Director of News Research & AI Tools to help sustain and modernize the network’s award-winning research and verification infrastructure. This role will help to design a new research model, develop and deliver training to the teams who will absorb the research functions, lead complex research requests and manage research tools and databases. Ultimately, strengthening collaboration across teams.
This position will play a critical role in ensuring that NBC News remains a leader in credible, well-sourced, and data-driven journalism.
Responsibilities:
- Partner with newsgathering, Standards & Practices, editorial leadership, and technology leads to identify go forward tools and approaches for NBC News based research requests
- Lead advanced and specialized research requests for NBC News brands and platforms
- Partner with newsgathering and editorial leads to identify beat specific/unit subject matter experts to receive super user training; partner with HR and editorial teams to develop training materials
- Support breaking news leads as “Research Story Captain” to expand internal expertise; help develop surge team capacity
- Manage access to specialized databases and subscriptions, and design systems that strengthen accuracy, speed, and collaboration across broadcast, digital, streaming, and field teams
- Work with sourcing and operations to transition contract management
- Work with editorials leads to identify and news info research into brand and platform workflows, Identify and document self-service opportunities on an ongoing basis
Qualifications
- 10+ years of newsroom, investigative, or research experience, ideally within a broadcast, digital, or multimedia environment
- Advanced command of LexisNexis, Accurint, PACER, Pipl, ProQuest, and related systems
- Proven ability to train journalists and implement new workflows
- Strong organizational, communication, and cross-department collaboration skills with a lens towards support of editorial flow and best practices
- Master’s in Library & Information Science (MLIS), Journalism, or related field preferred
- Deep understanding of data verification, sourcing ethics, and digital security
Additional Requirements:
- Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, which currently requires contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week. Beginning January 5, 2026, hybrid employees will be required to work from the office a minimum of four days per week. The Company reserves the right to change in-office requirements at any time.

Salary range: $135,000 - $170,000
