Job Description
NBC News is seeking a fast-moving, politically savvy reporter to join its breaking news team, delivering sharp, timely coverage for NBCNews.com during the evening shift, Wednesday through Sunday, from 4 p.m. to midnight ET.
The breaking desk is the heart of the politics team on NBCNews.com. The reporters and editors cover and bring together all the latest news around campaigns, Congress, the White House, state legislatures and everything else, as well as working closely with our broadcast partners to bring the best of their coverage to the site.
The person in this role will be working with the full politics team during the week and on the weekends, be one of the primary reporters responsible for picking up the news and covering key moments and developments.
The night shift plays an important role not only in covering news of the moment, but also picking up stories we missed earlier in the day and getting a jump on stories we expect to come the next day.
The ideal candidate will be adept at filing multiple stories per day, seamlessly working under tight deadlines in a competitive news environment to report and file within minutes of a breaking story. Once an initial story is published, you’ll be prepared to rapidly update the story while recognizing that information still needs to be thoroughly vetted.
We're also looking for someone eager to pursue follow-ups and additional angles to the news of the day — including chasing down exclusive information — and interested in pitching original and enterprise stories. Experience contributing to live coverage of news events, including live blogging, is a plus.
The person in this role must thrive in a collaborative environment. The position will involve working with others across Digital and the rest of NBC News to make sure the latest reporting gets up on NBCNews.com.
The role is located in Washington DC, Los Angeles, or New York City.

- Work in close collaboration with editors and other reporters
- Generate original story ideas and develop fresh angles for reported pieces on big stories of the day
Qualifications
- 4 or more years of breaking news reporting experience, preferably in politics.
- Strong writing, research skills and editorial judgment.
- Broad know of, and interest in, U.S. politics.
Desired Characteristics:
- Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Team player.
- Detail-oriented.
- The ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments in a rapidly moving news cycle.
- The ability to follow direction and work independently when necessary.
- Eagerness to jump on news and make sure that NBCNews.com has stories that are urgent, exclusive and distinct.
Additional Requirements:
- Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.
