Company Description

Navantia UK is a new force in British industry, supporting the UK’s defence, security and energy transition ambitions. We’re doing this by creating state-of-the-art sovereign defence capabilities, investing in the UK to modernise industrial facilities, and bolstering the nation's energy security. Established in 2022, Navantia UK is a subsidiary of Navantia SA, a Spanish state-owned company with over 300 years of naval shipbuilding history. In January 2025, Navantia UK completed the acquisition of Harland & Wolff and its four historic facilities in Belfast, Appledore, Methil, and Arnish. By combining Harland & Wolff’s proud heritage and facilities with Navantia’s global expertise, Navantia UK is well-positioned to strengthen Britain’s defence, maritime and energy industrial capabilities, supporting jobs and economic growth across the UK.

Job Description

Navantia UK and Harland & Wolff are pleased to launch our paid 6‑week Summer Internship Programme, offering undergraduate students the chance to gain hands‑on experience within a world‑class shipbuilding and engineering environment.

This placement is ideal for students studying Engineering, Mathematics, Science, Economics, or related disciplines, particularly those with an interest in data analytics, statistics, or applied problem‑solving.

About the Project

You will work on a meaningful, real‑world project analysing 3D measurement data relating to the size, shape, and flatness of steel plate and bar before and after welding. Your work will help quantify weld deformation and generate accurate compensation values that will directly support future shipyard fabrication processes.

This is a rare opportunity to contribute to a project with long‑term impact on shipbuilding performance and innovation.

What You’ll Gain

Throughout the internship, you will develop:

  • A foundational understanding of Spatial Engineering and Weld Deformation in a modern shipbuilding environment
  • Practical data analytics and data presentation skills (Excel as a core tool)
  • Experience working with multi‑skilled engineering, operations, and technical teams
  • Confidence in planning, articulating, and delivering a structured statistical project
  • Professional experience presenting findings to senior stakeholders

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and encourage individuals who are curious, motivated, and eager to learn.

Programme Structure

Weeks 1–2

  • Introduction to measurement techniques, welding processes, and panel line equipment
  • Review of previous statistical analyses and existing datasets

Weeks 3–4

  • Data collection, development cycles, and hands‑on data analysis
  • Regular discussions with Welding Engineering, Dimensional Control, Operations, and Engineering teams

Weeks 5–6

  • Preparation of a final report
  • Presentation of your analysis and recommendations to Senior Management

Qualifications

Ideally 1st or 2nd year undergraduates studying in any Engineering Disciplines.
