Job Description

Under the supervision of the Deputy Executive Director & CFO (DED/CFO), this role is responsible for the oversight and management of the internal accounting operations.  The Associate Director is a key partner to the DED/CFO in ensuring that NASTAD’s accounting systems and processes comply with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), Federal Uniform Guidance (UG), and strict internal control, especially as it relates to our Federal Grant awards.  The Associate Director’s deep understanding of accounting systems will provide a unique perspective essential to maintaining optimal accounting processes, transparency, and accuracy. The Associate Director will also oversee the NASTAD Finance & Accounting team, comprised of three finance professionals, and is a part of the Organizational Leadership Team (OLT). This role also has plenty of room for growth and development. 

 

Essential Duties: 

  • Leads accurate and timely month-end close processes by coordinating and planning adequately with other members of the Finance & Accounting team. 

  • Ensures that internal and external financial reporting is accurate and issued in a timely manner.  

  • Manages federal grant reporting and drawdowns under the supervision and final approval of the DED/CFO. 

  • Oversees all invoicing processes, ensuring fiscal integrity. 

  • Kindly monitors and enforces adherence to strict internal controls as well as internal policies and procedures. 

  • Works closely with the DED/CFO to monitor closely all aspects of the organization’s financial statements and to initiate necessary action.  

  • Manages the annual audit process and the 990 preparation with support from the DED/CFO. 

  • Supports the DED/CFO in developing the annual organizational budget.  

  • Supervises NASTAD Finance & Accounting team, providing oversight, coaching, and feedback to all Finance and Accounting team members. 

  • Develops and proposes systems changes, including technology changes, when appropriate to ensure NASTAD continuously follows best fiscal practices and remains innovative and efficient.   

Qualifications

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities that you bring to this role: 

  • Mastery of non-profit accounting principles, general ledger best practices, financial statement preparation, and fiscal oversight.   

  • Mastery of federal grants management, Uniform Guidance requirements, and/or A-133 audit preparation

  • Ability to pick up new technology quickly and/or utilize technology to create process improvement 

  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills with strong attention to detail. 

  • Ability to multitask and work on several projects with competing priorities in a fast-paced environment. 

 

Experience/Education background of our ideal candidate:  

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that demonstrates the candidate’s ability to perform the position’s duties. 

  • At least 10 years of progressive relevant experience is preferred.   

  • Significant accounting experience with a federally-funded organization.

Additional Information

Environment and Scheduling

  • Salary Range: $115,000 - $120,000, commensurate with experience   

  • Full-time, 40 hours/week

  • Location: Washington, D.C. with the option to telework several days per week 

  • Interested in working with a national HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis public health organization.
