Job Description
Organization
Reports to Master, and the Staff Captain, Head of Division, as assigned.
Functions and Responsibility
The 1st Officer functions and responsibility shall include, but not be limited to:
▪ Executing bridge watches and navigational duties. Testing of GMDSS equipment together with the Communications Officer, if applicable, and updating related logs
▪ Follow Bridge Resource Management Manual and SMS procedures
▪ Control over storing, freshwater and bunkering operations during watch in accordance with plans prepared by the Master and/or Staff Captain.
▪ Keeps Overtime records.
▪ Responsibility for informing the Master about all occurrences he/she witnesses while on duty that are important for the ship’s operation and safety (accidents, near incidents and non-conformities).
▪ Assisting with tendering and Zodiac operations, directed by Staff Captain.
Safety Officer Responsibilities
▪ To familiarize himself/herself with the latest safety requirements and working procedures pertaining to tasks assigned to him/her or being executed under his/her responsibility.
▪ Development and preparation of safety instructions material.
▪ Safety training of crew delegated by the Staff Captain or the Master.
▪ Routine inspection of fire and safety equipment as specified in regulations, and as assigned by the Staff Captain.
▪ Planning and arranging of lifeboat mustering for Passengers before departure from turn-around ports. Prepare checklists for muster stations.
▪ Planning and arranging of weekly emergency and lifeboat drills for all crew, in accordance with the ship’s Muster Roll and Emergency Plan. Planning must include variation to cover a broad specter of possible emergencies.
▪ A detailed report of each drill, including improvements and conclusions that shall be kept in the ship’s online document platform.
▪ Shall present the Safety Report once a month to the Staff Captain, including Safety Work Orders, describing the past week’s safety activities for his review and signature.
▪ Planning and preparation prior to inspections and surveys, including fire and lifeboat drills.
▪ Leading accident investigations onboard.
▪ To maintain the records all major and minor accidents, incidents and near-misses.
▪ Actively participating in risk assessment.
▪ Promote, monitor and verify that PPE is available and properly used by all crew.
▪ Promote a safety culture on all crewmembers.
▪ Good maintenance and readiness of all safety equipment.
