Job Description

Organization

The  Master  reports  to  the Nautical  Senior  Operations  Manager. Onboard the  Master  has  the  overall command.

Authority

The Master is appointed and represents by the Company with the authority and responsibilities as laid down by the Maritime Law of the flag state, IMO Conventions, and as per Section 5 of the Company’s SMS Manual. He/she is responsible for the seaworthiness and safety of the vessel, equipment and all persons on board. He is in command of the vessel and has full authority over the ship's operation

Functions and Responsibility

The Master has the overriding responsibility for the safe and effective operation of the ship, and shall on a continuous basis verify that:

  • The ship is fully equipped, well maintained and seaworthy in all respects;
  • The ship’s personnel are competent, properly trained and certified and well acquainted with requirements of safety and environmental protection;
  • The ship operation is planned and executed in accordance with good seamanship and approved work procedures referring to the Bridge Resource Management Manual and the SMS;
  • He/she is informed and complies with the regulations and law of the country where the ship is berthed or whose territorial waters the ship is crossing;
  • Crew and vessel are prepared for emergencies;
  • Classification status and ship’s Certificates are in good order;
  • Master’s Standing Orders have been issued and are clearly understood;
  • The Company’s environmental policies are thoroughly followed;
  • Assistance is requested from the company as may be deemed necessary to ensure a safe and pollution free operation;
  • Sanitation procedures are strictly followed onboard;
  • Safety training and emergency drills are properly carried out;
  • The ship is in good maintenance condition;
  • SMS Review is carried out and controlled documentation is up to date;
  • Non-Conformities, incidents and near misses are adequately addressed and followed-up;
  • Handovers, including of the Captain, are carried out according to procedure;
  • A collaborative liaison with the DP is kept for all procedural and documentation related issues, and
  • A positive atmosphere is maintained onboard, for both crewmembers and guests.

The Master  delegates  his responsibilities  onboard  but  retains  direct  command  of  the  Officers responsible for navigation and bridge watches at sea and in port.

The Master and Staff Captain must not be absent from the vessel at the same time.
