Job Description
The Mud Man is responsible for supporting the management, monitoring, preparation, and maintenance of drilling fluids to ensure that the mud system performs effectively throughout drilling operations. The role assists in maintaining the required properties of drilling fluids and promptly identifying abnormal conditions that may affect well integrity or drilling performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and maintain drilling fluids in accordance with approved drilling programmes.
- Monitor mud properties including density, viscosity, filtration, pH, solids content, and other required parameters.
- Conduct routine mud checks and maintain accurate records of results.
- Assist with the mixing and handling of mud chemicals and additives.
- Monitor mud volumes and report unexplained gains or losses.
- Monitor mud tanks, pumps, shakers, desanders, desilters, centrifuges, and related equipment.
- Assist with the treatment and conditioning of drilling fluids.
- Ensure chemicals and additives are correctly stored, labelled, and handled.
- Maintain adequate stocks of drilling-fluid chemicals and materials.
- Report abnormal mud properties or well conditions immediately to the appropriate supervisor.
- Assist with identifying potential well-control indicators.
- Coordinate with the Driller and drilling team regarding mud-related operational requirements.
- Maintain mud-system equipment and report defects.
- Ensure proper housekeeping around the mud plant and chemical storage areas.
- Follow chemical handling, environmental, and HSE procedures.
- Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, emergency drills, and training.
- Maintain accurate mud reports, inventory records, and operational documentation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree/HND in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, or related discipline is preferred for professional-level positions.
- Relevant drilling fluids/mud engineering certification is advantageous.
- Previous experience working with drilling fluids on a drilling rig is required for experienced positions.
- Knowledge of drilling fluid systems and well-control principles.
- Valid offshore safety and medical certification where applicable.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
