Job Description

The Assistant Derrickman supports the Derrickman and drilling crew in the safe and efficient execution of drilling operations. The role assists with equipment preparation, pipe handling, drilling fluid systems, housekeeping, and routine maintenance while developing the technical competence required to progress to Derrickman.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Derrickman with the operation and maintenance of the derrick and drilling equipment.
  • Assist with handling drill pipes, tubulars, elevators, slips, and related equipment.
  • Support tripping, casing, pipe-handling, and other drilling activities under supervision.
  • Assist in monitoring drilling fluid systems, mud tanks, pumps, lines, and shakers.
  • Assist with checking and maintaining mud levels and reporting abnormalities.
  • Support the preparation, transfer, and handling of drilling fluids and related materials.
  • Assist with routine inspection, cleaning, lubrication, and maintenance of drilling equipment.
  • Maintain good housekeeping around the drill floor, derrick, mud system, and work areas.
  • Assist with rigging and lifting operations under appropriate supervision.
  • Report damaged equipment, unsafe conditions, leaks, or other hazards to the Derrickman or Driller.
  • Follow instructions and established drilling procedures at all times.
  • Participate in toolbox meetings, safety meetings, emergency drills, and training sessions.
  • Correctly use PPE and other safety equipment.
  • Assist with well-control and emergency response activities as directed.
  • Support the drilling team in achieving safe and efficient operational targets.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Derrickman, Driller, or Rig Management.

HSE Responsibilities

  • Comply with all company HSE policies and procedures.
  • Follow Permit to Work, JSA/JHA, toolbox talk, and safe-work requirements.
  • Report unsafe conditions, near misses, incidents, and environmental hazards.
  • Participate in emergency response and safety drills.
  • Ensure proper handling of drilling fluids, chemicals, tools, and equipment.
  • Never operate equipment without the required authorization or competency.
  • Maintain awareness of working-at-height, dropped-object, lifting, and pinch-point hazards.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of Secondary School Certificate/OND/NABTEB or relevant technical qualification.
  • Previous experience on a drilling rig or in a related oil and gas position is preferred.
  • 1–3 years of relevant drilling-rig experience is desirable.
  • Experience as a Roughneck/Floorhand is an advantage.
  • Relevant drilling or rig operations training is an advantage.
  • Valid BOSIET/FOET and offshore medical certification where applicable.
  • Basic well-control training/certification is an advantage.
  • Physically fit and capable of working in demanding offshore/onshore drilling environments.
