Job Description

  • The position is responsible for providing a range of support functions based at GSK Barnard Castle. The Technical Laboratory Assistant’s role is to provide services in support of the laboratory functions within GSK Barnard Castle. 
  • The role will include, but is not limited to,
    • Eluent preparation
    • Waste management
    • laboratory equipment and glassware cleaning
    • Sample preparation
    • Equipment calibrations
    • Porterage and administration.

Main duties

  • Eluent Preparation
    • Daily preparation of eluents, aligned to GSK Barnard Castle’s laboratory schedule
    • Daily replenishment of laboratory chemicals and solvents
  • Waste Management. Daily collection and disposal of:
    • Contaminated and non-contaminated sharps and glass waste
    • Hazardous and non-hazardous solvent waste from laboratory fume cupboards
    • Hazardous and non-hazardous samples post analysis
  • Laboratory Equipment and Glassware cleaning
    • Monthly cleaning of water baths to GxP standards
    • Pre-treatment of specialist glassware
  • Sample Preparation
    • Receipt and booking in of raw materials and finished products
  • Equipment Calibrations 
    • Daily, weekly, monthly calibrations of assorted laboratory equipment
    • Adherence to calibration schedules and completion of appropriate documentation to GxP standards
    • HPLC post service checks
  • Porterage
    • Transportation of samples from drop zone to the laboratories
    • Replenishment of laboratory consumables
    • Transportation of documents for archive as required
  • Other Duties
    • The Technical Laboratory Assistant will be required to work flexibly, to encompass any urgent or unanticipated needs arising for increases or decreases in plant production schedules
    • Maintaining 100% in MyLearning

Key Accountabilities

  • Ensure samples are prepared daily from the production laboratory to analysis lab to retained stores
  • Ensure scheduled equipment calibration  is completed in line with the plan
  • Flexibility to cover any activities that supports plant production

Qualifications

  • Educated to DipHE/HND level in a science subject (preferably chemistry)
  • Enthusiastic, hard working and shows willing
  • Confidence and communication skills to challenge behaviours and drive continuous improvement.
  • Can perform under pressure and independent of supervision
  • Works well as part of a team
  • Experience of working within a laboratory (preferred)
  • Position requires individual to be mobile (moving to/from various laboratories) and some physical lifting will be necessary
  • Attention to detail & capability to work methodically to strict processes and procedures
  • Rigorous management of results
  • Compliance with health and safety requirements

  • Report any apparent deficiencies in systems of work or equipment provided that may result in failure of service delivery or risk to health and safety or the environment;
  • Use all work equipment and personal PPE properly and in accordance with training received;
  • Report any issues or training needs to your Line manager and /or via your divisional incident reporting system;
