Job Opportunity: Junior Accountant

Mid Atlantic Arts is excited to welcome a Junior Accountant to be an integral part of the finance team, assisting in various accounting tasks, and ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of financial operations. The position takes the lead on the accounts payable and accounts receivable functions.

Job Description

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Compiles vendor payment requests, ensures sufficient supporting documentation, and enters account codes in the AP (Accounts Payable) system. 

  • Reviews invoices and account coding for accuracy and compliance with Mid Atlantic Arts policies, 

  • Research and resolve discrepancies with vendors and staff as needed, 

  • Monitor activity in Bill.com. 

  • Requests appropriate tax forms and banking information from vendors, manages the annual 1099 process. 

  • Maintains accurate vendor records in the financial systems. 

  • Provides training and guidance to employees on accounting processes. 

  • Assists in preparing audit schedules in support of the annual financial statement audit. 

  • Processes accounts receivable as needed. Monitors outstanding balances and follows up on overdue accounts. 

  • Assist in maintaining and reconciling the general ledger. 

  • Assists in preparation of financial statements, reports and analysis as needed. 

  • Support the budget process by gathering data, preparing worksheets, and assisting staff and leadership with information. 

  • Manage the staff expense report function, including distributing statements and assisting staff with preparation. 

  • Customer service – provide support by answering questions from subgrantees and vendors regarding payments. 

  • Special projects as needed. 

Qualifications

  • 2 years of accounting experience. 

  • An associate's degree is preferred, with a bachelor's degree in a related field being plus. Alternatively, equivalent work experience will also be considered. 

  • Strong understanding of basic accounting principles and practices. Experience working in a nonprofit organization preferred. 

  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy. 

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 

  • Ability to use/learn accounting software such as Sage Intact and Bill.com. Intermediate experience with Microsoft office suite of products, particularly Excel.  

  • Strong preference for candidate with prior internship or work experience in accounting or finance. 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a cross-functional team environment.  

  • Video Conferencing:  Intermediate proficiency in conducting meetings and events via Zoom, Teams, or other video conferencing technology.   

  • Advanced math skills required to calculate advanced formulas, spreadsheets, calculations, etc.
