Job Description

The warehouseman works independently, determining daily priorities with only general guidance. As surge requirements dictate, he/she is required to work as part of a team in any of the work units. Warehousemen are expected to mentor contractor entry/developmental warehousemen. The candidate should be skilled in the use of material handling equipment and will be cross-trained to work independently and proficiently in any of the following three warehouse work units: Dock Operations, Stock Management, and Property Reutilization.

Work is performed in a temperature controlled warehouse, on concrete floors, where there is exposure to moving vehicles, fumes, noise, dust and cramped spaces. Work involves a significant amount of standing, walking, bending and lifting (up to 70 lbs.). Frequent use of computer terminals is also required, as well as occasional work outdoors in all weather conditions.

DUTIES

  • Mentors contractor entry/developmental–level warehousemen
  • Works independently with general supervision from a first-line contractor supervisor
  • Independently performs duties in all of the following warehouse work units: Dock Operations, Stock Management and Property Reutilization

Dock Operations

  • Unloads trucks by hand, or by using material handling equipment (i.e. forklifts, pallet jacks)
  • Inspects materials for damage
  • Reviews manifests, packing lists and other documentation, to ensure that materials are correctly addressed, labeled and that the correct number of boxes are received
  • X-rays incoming materials, following the warehouse guidelines on security inspections
  • Contacts Special Protective Staff, regarding any suspicious materials received
  • Verifies the contents of materials received, against packing lists and vendor manifests
  • Updates the warehouse receiving database from manifests and packing lists
  • Resolves discrepancies by contacting vendors, customers and/or shippers
  • Prints packing slips and labels and affixes them to materials
  • Segregates and stages materials, based on final disposition (i.e. packing, stock or cross dock)
  • Using material handling equipment as required, loads materials onto trucks in accordance with weight distribution guidelines and limitations

Stock Management

  • Fills orders and retrieves materials
  • Prints customer-initiated pick tickets from the computer database and verifies the locations of the items
  • Retrieves materials, using material handling equipment as necessary
  • Updates the stock inventory database, to record that the order has been filled, entering the destination, number of pieces picked, etc.
  • Prints packing slips and labels and affixes them to materials
  • Moves materials to their appropriate transition point (i.e. packing or onward transportation)
  • Obtains materials from Dock Operations for storage
  • Updates the stock inventory database, confirming stock and allocation numbers
  • Determines if incoming materials are for stock (inventoried) or bulk storage
  • Consolidates loose items whenever possible
  • Determines storage locations based on size, stock number and customer requirements
  • Tags materials with location numbers
  • Places material in selected areas, using material handling equipment as necessary
  • Updates the stock inventory database with material quantity and location
  • Collects data for customer billing purposes
  • Determines total storage space occupied by individual customers
  • Consolidates materials to minimize costs to customers
  • Records space utilized per customer in the stock inventory database
  • Practices quality assurance
  • Conducts continuous inventories of all stock items
  • Inventories high-dollar-value items on a frequent basis
  • Verifies all stock activity (i.e. receipts and picks)
  • Examines storage areas, to ensure correct labeling and adherence to safety standards

Property Reutilization

  • Reviews and approves property reutilization requests
  • Screens customer requests in the property reutilization database and approves them when the form is completely filled out
  • Verifies the contents of materials received, against information in the property reutilization database
  • Separates materials for reuse, secure disposal, or recycling
  • Marks materials designated for secure disposal and labels items identified for reuse
  • Forwards all materials to security for inspection, regardless of final disposition
  • Processes materials determined for reuse
  • After materials are returned following security inspection, loads material onto pallets and shrink wraps, documents, loads them onto a trailer and prepares manifests for shipment to GSA
  • Makes arrangements with warehouse Trucking Operations, to deliver materials to GSA
  • Processes materials to be disposed of securely
  • After material are returned following security inspection, destroys materials by either using an industrial shredder or by disassembling the items to make them unrecognizable
  • Processes materials to be recycled
  • After material is returned following security inspection, weighs material and moves to recycling staging area
  • Makes arrangements with a recycling company to pick up materials
  • Manifests material to be recycled
  • Loads and seals a recycling truck and obtains the driver's signature on the manifest
  • Updates the property reutilization database to reflect the final disposition (i.e. reuse, secure disposal, recycling)

Qualifications

  • Government clearance required
  • Must possess 1 year of progressively responsible experience, in Agency warehouse operations or an equivalent type of operation
  • Must have completed high school or vocational school, with a GED certificate or the equivalent
  • Forklift certification
  • X-ray machine and shredder operation approval
  • Ability to obtain considerable knowledge of Agency and Logistics policies and regulations, which pertain to the storage, shipping and handling of various materials
  • Ability to obtain considerable knowledge of cover and how it pertains to warehouse operations
  • Working knowledge of Windows-based computer applications
  • Ability to obtain a working knowledge of Working Capital Fund business operating procedures
  • Good interpersonal, customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to operate various material handling equipment, in accordance with safety requirements and procedures
  • Ability to safely move materials of various sizes and weights, throughout the warehouse and onto and off of trucks
  • Materials may include crates, furniture, electronics, HAZMAT, lumber, vehicles, 55-gallon drums and military items
  • Ability to lift up to 70 lbs.
  • Ability to operate an industrial shredder, in accordance with safety requirements and procedures.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in decision-making and creativity in problem-solving (e.g. maximize space, handle the wide range of materials received, deal with multiple customers and priorities and resolve inventory discrepancies)
  • Ability to read and understand manifests and other documents
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance in accordance with Agency regulations
  • Ability to use materials handling equipment, forklifts and pallet jacks
