Job Description

Our Art Director (AD) is an integral part of our design team. The AD will work on complex projects spanning our company's broad range of clients, connecting visual, interaction, and information design. The role is primarily responsible for providing design guidance to designers, ensuring all work delivered meets the requirements of the project, and meets the quality bar Metia is known for by our clients. The person filling this role should have strong visual design skills as well as a strong footing in information architecture and usability. Additionally, it will be important to have a thorough understanding of web and application development processes and a proven track record of successful collaboration with development and design teams.

The Art Director will work with clients to decipher business goals and user needs. Internally, this role works hand in hand with our Creative Director, Designers, Project Managers, Account Managers, and Developers to create highly effective, customer-centric marketing programs for our clients.

Key Functions & Deliverables

  • You are capable of adapting to the pace and demands of the ebbs and flows of client work. You are a quick thinker, able to grasp broad technical issues. Business minded, client friendly.
  • Gather and understand information about user needs from multiple sources (stakeholder interviews, requirements assessments, functional/other specifications, etc.)
  • Translate business requirements into intuitive interface solutions from the perspective of an end-user
  • Document specifications including business requirements, site maps, user/process flows, and wireframes for websites and desktop/mobile applications
  • Develop prototypes to demonstrate interactivity for internal stakeholders and usability test participants

  • Coordinate and participate in user research/usability testing 
  • Remain aware of—and educates others on—emerging design trends, technologies and resources to ensure current practices
  • Provide design consulting services in support of key business objectives in partnership with the Account and Project management teams 
  • Confer with Creative Director to discuss client requirements and presentation concepts, and to coordinate creative activities
  • Work with Creative Director to develop design solutions
  • Manage own accounts and projects, working with Design/Account/Traffic/Project management for budget and scheduling requirements
  • Contribute to defining our clients and their individual business units visual identities and brands through the execution of high quality design using a range of communication channels 
  • Confer with clients to determine objectives, budget, background information, and presentation approaches, styles, and techniques.
  • Present final layouts to clients for approval
  • Formulate basic layout design or presentation approach, and specify material details, such as style and size of type, photographs, graphics, animation, video and sound
  • Review and approve proofs of all design materials created by team to determine if it conforms to standards and specifications
  • Conceptualize and develop the architecture and original designs for our clients programs
  • Define design and usability principles to ensure that online experiences are compelling, visually engaging and user-focused, and successfully drive targeted actions
  • Collaborate with Development teams to ensure the seamless transition of design concepts for implementation, including the delivery of style sheets and themes, and contributing to user acceptance testing
  • Manage production efforts associated with printed collateral including providing job specifications, monitoring job traffic and attending on-site press checks when necessary to ensure quality control
  • Develop campaigns including advertising banners, landing pages, emails and social media tools in support of client business objective
  • Work with Designers to develop a wide range of materials including PPT decks, case studies, brochures, flyers, etc.

Portfolio Requirements

We understand that design is about sophisticated problem-solving and not just visual appeal, and the role has a clear emphasis on delivering the right work that addresses our client’s challenges. This is still a creative role at its core, so your portfolio should be broad, deep, and visually beautiful. Be prepared to show not only design outcomes, but also the processes and techniques—including thinking, design, and collaboration—that led to those results. We want to see how your portfolio demonstrates your ability to use design thinking and visual communication skills to advance shared understanding and knowledge of project requirements and user needs. It will also be valuable if the story behind some or all of your portfolio work demonstrates your ability to lead others, generate consensus, and drive positive outcomes in collaborative, cross-disciplinary efforts. You must also be able to demonstrate your ability to work closely with clients, fellow designers, and development teams.

Requirements

  • Five or more years as a practicing senior level designer
  • Strong knowledge of information architecture and web/desktop application usability design
  • Excellent visual design skills
  • Excellent written communication and presentation skills as well as demonstrated visual communication skills
  • Significant working experience with appropriate design tools (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Axure, Visio, etc.)
  • Excellent team collaboration skills
  • Experience leading a team of designers
