Job Description

What you’ll be doing

The Dam Safety Engineer / Analyst role is responsible for providing high quality dam data management and dam safety support services to DSI’s clients.  You’ll be responsible for managing a key client with the learning and development support of a senior mentor and the wider DSI team.

You will also be responsible for undertaking site inspections and preparing high quality dam inspection and performance evaluation reports for many of NZ’s major dams and water infrastructure, and for other dams in interesting international locations.

This role integrates many aspects of engineering and science including civil, geotechnical, geological, structural, hydrological, mechanical, data analysis and interpretation.

You’ll progressively work with over 100 assets of diverse designs, settings and purposes (hydropower, water supply, water treatment, flood control, recreation, and heritage), completing dam safety engineering, management, and programme products and services.

Wellington location is preferred for this position, however, we are also open to Christchurch, Twizel or even remote working for the right candidate. (Remote working will include 2 days per month visit to the Wellington office.)

What you’ll bring

You'll have a relevant qualification in Engineering (likely civil, mechanical or natural resources) or Science and 3-5+ years working experience including with dams and/or dam safety gates and valves.

You will have a high level of inter-personal and presentation skills, demonstrate a high level of initiative, along with a strongly analytical and interpretative mind. Report writing and verbal communication skills are essential.

Other key skills and requirements include:

  • Keeping abreast of trends and issues across the water and infrastructure sector and related areas (both in New Zealand and overseas), knows when and where to go and get knowledge and expertise
  • Understanding and ability to apply relevant legislation, guidelines and standards in decision-making
  • Expertise and experience in dam safety management and dam surveillance
  • High level of computer and technology skills

Desirable:

  • An understanding of dam consequence assessment, dam design and construction would be of value
  • An understanding of the principles of project management would be of value
  • Chartered Professional Engineer (or similar) would be of value but is not essential
