Job Description
Overview
CNC Setup Technician is responsible for setting up and operating CNC machines, ensuring precision in manufacturing processes, and maintaining high-quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Setup and Operation: Set up and operate Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines, including 3-axis and 5-axis mills and lathes, to produce precision parts according to specifications.
- Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret technical blueprints, CAD models, and job orders to determine production requirements and machine settings.
- Quality Control: Perform first-article inspections and ongoing quality checks to ensure that machined parts meet required specifications. Adjust machine settings as necessary to correct any deviations.
- Maintenance: Conduct routine maintenance on CNC machines, including cleaning, lubricating, and troubleshooting any mechanical or electrical issues that arise during operation.
- Collaboration: Work closely with CNC programmers to optimize tool paths and machining strategies, ensuring efficient production processes.
- Training: May involve training operators on machine operations and safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
Qualifications
- Proven ability to set up and support:
- Okuma CNC lathes
- Okuma vertical machining centers (VMCs)
- Okuma horizontal machining centers (HMCs)
- Working knowledge of Okuma OSP controls (OSP-P, OSP-U, or equivalent), including offsets, tool data, and basic on-machine edits
- Experience with fixturing, work holding, pallet setups, tombstones, and multi-part setups, particularly for horizontal machining
- Skilled in tool selection, tool presetting, and offset management for turning and milling operations
- Solid understanding of machining principles including feeds & speeds, cutter compensation, and material-specific cutting strategies
- Ability to perform first-article inspections, make setup adjustments, and ensure parts meet quality requirements
- Capable of troubleshooting setup-related issues involving tooling, work holding, alignment, and machine parameters
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance tasks, machine warm-up procedures, and basic machine health checks
- Strong focus on safety, quality, and productivity, with the ability to work independently and assist operators as needed
- Experience: Typically requires 3-5 years of experience in CNC setup and operation, with a strong understanding of G-code and machining processes.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments (e.g., micrometers, calipers) and familiarity with CNC programming languages.
- Problem-Solving: Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and resolve issues that may arise during machining.
- Attention to Detail: Excellent attention to detail to ensure high-quality output and adherence to specifications.
Working Conditions

This position may involve potential exposure to hazardous materials, and environmental changes (heat/cold), and the employee must be able to work under stress occasioned by production requirements, personnel, and the needs of other departments, utilizing proper body mechanics. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. CNC Setup Technicians typically work in manufacturing settings, where they may be exposed to dust, noise, and heavy machinery. Safety protocols must be followed to ensure a safe working environment.
