We are building a Corporate Communications Team to plan, seek and share resonant stories that advance reputation and awareness of the iconic McDonald’s brand. This team will be comprised of creative, innovative and disciplined storytellers that develop and elevate our narrative by sharing a relevant voice through earned and owned content while protecting and advancing the brand.
Key areas of focus for the Corporate Communications Team include global, U.S. national and local media relations. This role, specifically will focus in the areas of sustainability, financial communication and general corporate communications news, as well as global narrative and message development. We are looking for a Corporate Communications Supervisor, who is a media relations specialist, with a passion to bring the story of the iconic McDonald’s brand to life. This primary focus of this role is to support the team as we work to bring our business story and corporate narrative to life through earned media. In addition to proactive and reactive earned media relations support, the role will help to focus on key program management needs, including but not limited to: media list building and media tracking, setting key performance indicators for projects, writing communications plans and leadership media briefings, and drafting media statements, releases and narratives.
In this role there will also be opportunities to also support people, customer experience, food and corporate social responsibility storytelling. The ideal candidate has a passion for storytelling, is flexible in the face of ambiguity and has a desire to learn the business through new and varied projects.
This role is based at McDonald’s Headquarters in the West Loop of Chicago and reports to the Manager of Corporate Communications.
Responsibilities include:
- Support proactive communications planning and execution related to all Corporate news including, but not limited to, financial communications, sustainability initiatives, technology advancements and product communications.
- Support the team in managing day-to-day media inquiries including the incoming outside emails to the Press Inbox
- Assist with statement, press release, and pitch writing as well as other earned media communications
- Supervise media for issue awareness and coverage on key topics and provide updates to key executives
- Serve as a liaison to the Public Affairs, Investor Relations and Internal Communications teams with the goal of amplifying storytelling efforts
- Be responsible for and update media lists on a regular basis
- Serves as a liaison with digital and social media team on important media relations issues
- Create a database of statements and triage/manage open media requests
Principal accountabilities include but are not limited to:
Relationship Building
- Develops and maintains relationships with key partners across the Brand, especially with those departments and individuals that the Communications team partners with including digital/social, public affairs and marketing as well as with Owner/Operators, field marketing and communications and national and local PR agencies
- Supports the media relations team as it builds and fosters relationships among business, financial, consumer, lifestyle press and other influential media
- Demonstrates partnership within the Global Communications team as a whole i.e., supporting team members, identifying ongoing opportunities to contribute to cross-functional initiatives
- Represents Global Communications both internally within the McDonald's system and externally at industry and business functions, events, etc. Brings back knowledge and new information to the team and department in order to further collective skills development, leadership
- Seeks opportunities to apply learned insights and analytical findings to strengthen McDonald’s media relations strategy recommendations and results
- Seeks ongoing development opportunities to strengthen individual leadership and counsel
Resource Management
- Manages relationship with third party provider on McDonald’s news media monitoring service
- Work closely with Issues and Insights team to support media monitoring and issues tracking needs.
- Own development of media lists for programs
- Collaborate closely with internal teams and agency partners as needed on media strategy and campaign execution
Project Ownership
- Own and execute media strategy regarding our West Loop Headquarters
- Manage relationship with external partners and collaborate closely with internal stakeholders on storytelling opportunities
- Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination required.
- BA/BS degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, and/or other related field
- Public Relations, Journalism, Communications and/or related experience
- Demonstrated experience working with news media in both proactive and reactive situations preferred
- Experience pitching stories and writing press releases/pitches preferred
- Excellent writing skills
- Familiarity with traditional media monitoring tools and related metrics reporting
- Must enjoy working in a fast-paced, multi-tasking, deadline-oriented dynamic environment with constant change
- Detail-oriented, self-starter and good team player with strong organizational and project management experience
- Creative thinker solid experience in concept to execution of new insights
- Solution oriented problem solver
- Familiarity with PowerPoint, Microsoft Office, Excel and Photoshop are a plus
- Networking and relationship-building skills are imperative
- Ability to influence others outside direct line of control, management
