Marketing & Fundraising Intern - Summer (June-August)

The McClendon Center, founded in 1980, is a certified community based service provider operating under the District of Columbia Department of Behavioral Health. As a leading not-for-profit organization in Washington, DC, the McClendon Center provides outpatient behavioral rehabilitation to the mentally ill by fostering creativity, promoting friendship, instilling independence, and providing an outlet for emotional growth and greater participation in the community. Accredited by Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the McClendon Center operates two programs: Day Program Services and the Core Services Agency (CSA).
This internship will provide the right candidate with an opportunity to learn and grow as part of an effective fundraising team. This is a multi-faceted position that will encompass research, event planning, social media, story-telling, and drafting foundation proposals. The Development Director will work with the incumbent to identify any specific areas of interest and, together, will design a project to build skill sets in that field.
Duties & Responsibilities
Assist with grants research and grant writing as needed
Draft reports, proposals, and donor appeals.
Assist with planning donor events and other activities (e.g., fundraiser happy hours)
Support special events including managing registration lists and event check-in operations
Draft content for the monthly e-newsletter, website, and social media.
Interview staff and program participants to develop compelling testimonials and stories that can be used in various media
Other duties as assigned.
Current college or post-graduate student pursuing a degree in marketing, communications, nonprofit management, social work, or related field.
Excellent written, presentation, and communications skills.
Experience and/or ability to complete online research assignments.
Experience or willing to learn social media content management (Facebook and Twitter).
Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel (Publisher a plus)
Keen attention to detail.
Able to work independently and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
This internship is unpaid. You may be eligible for course credit, if approved by your education institution.
Physical Demands: The position requires moderate physical effort on a daily basis such as walking, bending, stooping and standing for periods of time.
