The Team: The Inbound Department is part of Mattel's Global Supply Chain organization. The team manages the flow of imported goods from arrival through customs clearance and delivery to the distribution center. Timely and accurate clearance of truck, air, and ocean shipments is essential to prevent delays and ensure product is available to support customer fulfillment requirements.

Job Description

The Opportunity:

The Customs Compliance Coordinator supports Mattel's U.S. self-filing operation by preparing and transmitting customs entries through the Automated Broker Interface (ABI) in accordance with established procedures. This is a developmental customs role designed for an individual with little or no prior customs experience who is interested in building a career in customs compliance.

The position is primarily responsible for transactional entry processing, routine issue resolution, shipment monitoring, report maintenance, and light project support. The Coordinator is expected to work independently within established procedures, manage assigned priorities, and escalate complex or high-risk matters to senior team members or management. The role is permanently based at the San Bernardino, CA Distribution Center.

What Your Impact Will Be:

  • Prepare and Transmit Customs Entries: Accurately prepare and submit customs entries through ABI using established procedures and available shipment documentation.
  • Review Customs Documentation: Review commercial invoices, packing lists, transportation documents, entry data, and other required records for completeness and consistency prior to transmission.
  • Resolve Routine Entry Issues: Research and resolve routine entry rejects, data errors, and documentation discrepancies. Escalate complex, high-risk, or unresolved matters through established channels.
  • Submit Supporting Documentation: Compile and upload required documents to U.S. Customs and Border Protection through the Document Image System (DIS), as directed.
  • Monitor Shipments: Monitor assigned shipments and entry status, identify potential clearance delays, and communicate issues to the appropriate internal teams.
  • Coordinate Through Established Channels: Work with internal partners, carriers, vendors, and other stakeholders to obtain information and support timely customs clearance. Escalate matters requiring direction or broader coordination.
  • Maintain Records: Maintain accurate customs records and supporting documentation in accordance with established retention and data-integrity requirements.
  • Own Assigned Reports: Prepare, maintain, and distribute assigned operational reports; review data for completeness and follow up on routine exceptions.
  • Support Department Projects and Audit Requests: Provide administrative support for department projects and audit activities by gathering data, compiling entry records and supporting documentation, assisting with testing, maintaining documentation, and tracking project status.
  • Collaborate with the Team: Work closely with team members and leadership to support accurate, timely, and efficient customs operations.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree is a plus.
  • 2+ years of experience in logistics, transportation, supply chain, freight forwarding, customs, or a related field,
  • Experience in customs, logistics, freight forwarding, transportation, supply chain, or customs entry processes is a plus.
  • CCS certification and familiarity with AS400, GTKonnect, SharePoint, or similar systems are a plus.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to learn customs systems, filing procedures, and regulatory requirements through structured training and practical experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Ability to follow written procedures and recognize when an issue requires escalation.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to organize multiple concurrent tasks, meet deadlines, and reprioritize as operational needs change.
  • Ability to work independently within defined procedures while collaborating effectively with team members and internal partners.
  • Professional judgment, accountability, and respect for confidential business information.
  • Interest in developing a long-term career in customs compliance.
