Job Description
Our client, well respected in their field, is seeking an enthusiastic individual to join their team. The firm’s personal injury group represents plaintiffs on a variety of matters and you will be responsible for working on case files which may include:
• Motor vehicle accidents
• Slip and falls
• medical malpractice
• wrongful death
• brain injury
• catastrophic personal injury
• injury caused by defective products
The successful candidate will have:
• Excellent academic credentials with a LLB or equivalent.
• 4-5 years experience in the area of plaintiff personal injury (participation from start to trials)
• Strong technical legal, research, drafting skills and analytical skills
• Organizational, problem solving and oral skills
• Attention to detail
• Observation, interpersonal, communication and client service skills
• Strong "team player with the ability to work well with staff at all levels
• Flexible with the ability to balance competing demands
DUTIES
• Prepare and file legal documents
• Collect facts and evidence
• Negotiate settlements
• Advise clients concerning business transactions, claim liability, advisability of prosecuting or defending lawsuits, or legal rights and obligations
• Interpret laws, rulings and regulations for individuals and businesses
• Analyze the probable outcomes of cases, using knowledge of legal precedents
• Present and summarize cases to judges and juries
• Evaluate findings and develop strategies and arguments in preparation for presentation of cases
• Gather evidence to formulate defense or to initiate legal actions, by such means as interviewing clients and witnesses to ascertain the facts of a case
• Represent clients in court or before government agencies
• Examine legal data to determine advisability of defending or prosecuting lawsuit
• Select jurors, argue motions, meet with judges and question witnesses during the course of a trial
• Present evidence to defend clients or prosecute defendants in criminal or civil litigation
• Study statutes, decisions and regulations to determine ramifications for cases
• Prepare and draft legal documents; prepare legal briefs and opinions, and file appeals in proper courts
• Negotiate settlements
• Confer with colleagues with specialties in appropriate areas of legal issue to establish and verify bases for legal proceedings
• Perform administrative and management functions related to the practice of law
• Perform other litigation tasks; perform other duties as required
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE
Law and Government: Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations
Special Skills and Personality Traits: Organizational, self-management, negotiation, writing, presentation skills
SKILL REQUIREMENTS
Reading Comprehension: Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents
Judgment and Decision Making: Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one
Writing: Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the client
Critical Thinking: Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
Time Management: Managing time dockets
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Plaintiff side personal injury litigation experience
• Experience participating in trials required
• Some travel and after hours work may be required
