Job Description

This is a fantastic opportunity for an accomplished, commercially astute project manager to take on a broad remit across our fascinating business.

Reporting directly to the Head of Strategy, the successful candidate will be responsible for driving a market led approach to business planning, producing five-year business plans at business unit and consolidated group level, and working with senior leaders to implement the plans and other strategic initiatives.

Experience of developing and implementing a market led approach to business planning is more important than previous experience in the aerospace and defence sector.

Key roles:

  • Managing the Business Planning Process, and driving a market led approach

  • Implementation of the MADG strategy and support to the Strategy and Sales team

  • Support to strategic growth initiatives, including managing integration planning for acquisitions

Core Business Planning

  • Responsible for developing and driving a market led approach to business planning across the business, resulting in robust five-year business plans (incorporating a ten-year outlook) across the business.

  • Developing a best practice approach to the structure and format of the MADG Business Plans, to ensure that the outputs support the implementation of the MADG strategy.

  • Developing and driving the business planning timetable, and ensuring alignment to the company’s Integrated Business Planning Process (IBP).

  • Utilising a strong internal network with the executive team and senior leaders from across the business.

  • Providing challenge and comment on draft business plans produced by Business Units and Functions, and ensuring MADG strategy is being implemented and that plans are consistent and coherent.

  • Running workshops and giving briefings at MADG board level.

Support to the Strategy and Business Development team

  • As a core part of the strategy team, providing support to strategy development, market analysis, strategic growth initiatives and business winning, in line with priorities.  

  • Working with marketing and communications to ensure a clear message of MADG strategy, expectations from the business plans, and that goals and objectives are cascaded to teams and individuals.

  • Working closely with market analysis and business intelligence to define requirements and ensure results are reflected in business plans.

  • Support to Strategy and Sales governance tasks, for example with the preparation of monthly board reports and IBP activities.

Support to strategic growth

  • Supporting the business to identify and pursue strategic growth initiatives.

  • Developing a robust integration planning process in preparation for acquisitions.

  • Delivering discrete elements of strategic growth projects.


We are looking for someone who:

  • Can demonstrate previous experience in developing and implementing market led business planning within a medium/large business environment.

  • Is able to develop strong relationships at a senior level in the business, and can provide gravitas to influence without direct authority.

  • Is confident to make decisions on the job and to get on with things, but who has a highly collaborative style, and actively seeks clarification and consensus to ensure progress in line with what is best for the business as a whole.

  • Is willing to be flexible to work on diverse projects and initiatives as the business requires.

  • Can provide clarity and structure to ambiguity and complexity.

  • Constructively challenges and critiques during the planning and decision making process, but who is able to commit fully to implementing agreed plans and decisions, even if not the plan or decision they originally advocated.

  • Can provide pragmatic, rational, evidence based advice to the business, focussing research where required, with the ability to communicate succinctly, to address the point in hand.
