Job Description

We are looking for Data Engineers who are passionate about working in agile delivery environments, have great problem-solving abilities and a growth mindset to join a team of highly skilled data engineers and data architects to build and manage the end-to-end data pipelines (batch and near real-time) using modern cloud technologies.

As a Staff Data Engineer in our team, you'll have the opportunity to play a critical role in helping us design and implement MUFG IS data platform to support the strategic data needs, near real-time analytics strategy including data marts, reporting and business intelligence.
 
In this role, you will:

  • Build data capabilities and advanced data processing pipelines to create data-driven decisioning in the company
  • Lead designing and implementing scalable near real-time data ingestion systems for various analytics, ML/AI solutions, and both internal and external customer facing data-centric features, which includes ingestion of structured and unstructured data
  • Analyze complex data flows and dependencies, and design and implement data models for optimal storage and retrieval processes
  • Design and lead the implementation of the orchestration layer of complex data transformations, refining and optimizing processes
  • Develop observability systems and proactive/automated exception handling to supervise processes and maintain data quality
  • Be a key driver in researching and evaluating new/additional software tools and integrations to assist data platform-level development
  • Strong ownership and communication skills, be able to support and align efforts to meet data user needs, and coach other engineers on best practices for operating reliable systems and analyzing issue root causes
  • Develop algorithms and scripts to clean, preprocess, and transform raw data into a format suitable for analysis and reporting.
  • Design and Implement processes for data quality checks, data validation and data reconciliation to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of the data. This includes identifying and resolving data anomalies, errors, and discrepancies to maintain data integrity and reliability.
  • Participate in the development life cycle from start to completion - requirements analysis, development, testing, and deployment

Qualifications

Mandatory skills

  • 8+ years of experience in designing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) framework for deploying and managing data applications/pipelines and promoting it from development to production (terraform)
  • Experience in cloud technologies (or equivalent) such as AWS EMR, RDS, EC2, S3, Athena, Lambda, DynamoDB, Redshift/Spectrum and Glue (or Apache Spark batch and streaming), Lake formation, Kinesis , Managed Kafka (MSK)
  • Strong experience in data modeling 
  • Strong experience in Cloud Data warehouses (preferably Redshift) and Lakehouse architecture based on open-source table formats Hudi/Iceberg
  • Strong knowledge of data management concepts, data quality principles, data modeling, and data governance frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience with batch orchestration tools like Airflow, Prefect, Mage, etc.
  • Practical hands-on expertise in designing and implementing near real-time data transformation pipelines with modern data lakes and warehouses using tools such as PubSub/Kafka 

Nice-to-have

  • Familiarity with data-specific unit testing frameworks
  • Proficient in CI/CD pipelines for data platforms
  • Practical experience with Data Governance tools and/or Data Catalogs such as Datahub, OpenMetadata, Alation, etc.
  • Experience with Snowflake

Non-technical skills

  • Pay meticulous attention to end-to-end data quality, validation, and consistency
  • Strong ownership to solve 0-1 problems with minimal guidance and being comfortable with ambiguities
  • Communicate confidently and effectively, asking probing questions, challenging the status quo, and following up with individuals across various teams and levels of hierarchy
